Rallies to Down Delaware 8-7 on Last
Minute Goal

NEWARK,
DE -- Senior Jamie Lovejoy scored his
only goal of the game with 45 seconds left
to play as Rutgers rallied with two goals
in the final two minutes to upend host
University of Delaware in a closely-fought
non-league men's lacrosse game Saturday
afternoon at Rullo Stadium.
Lovejoy
scooped up a rebound off a missed shot by
Chris Doctor and fired a shot past
Delaware goalkeeper Chris Collins to
complete the comeback and give the Scarlet
Knights (1-0) the win in their season
opener. Delaware, which opened the season
2-0, dropped their second straight game to
fall to 2-2. Rutgers downed the Hens for
the third straight year.
Joe
Trentzsch, who has scored a goal in seven
straight gamees since last season,
contributed two goals for Delaware while
Cam Howard (right) scored one goal and
dished out three assists, Jordan Hall had
one goal and two assists, and Andy Hipple
had one goal and one assist. The Hens
outshot Rutgers 30-25, held a 12-4
advantage in faceoffs, and a 33-23 edge in
groundballs but could not overcome seven
penalties.
Rutgers,
which advanced to the NCAA Tournament a
year ago and was ranked No. 12 in the
pre-season Inside Lacrosse Top 20 poll,
got two goals from Doctor while Lovejoy
added an assist and John Flanagan dished
out three assists. All-American goalkeeper
Greg Havalchak recorded 12 saves in the
nets.
Delaware
overcame a 6-3 deficit late in the third
quarter by scoring four straight goals and
taking a 7-6 lead with just under four
minutes left to play. Hall started the
spurt as he ended a nearly 20-minute Blue
Hen scoring drought with a goal with 54
seconds left in the third quarter. Howard
fed Trentzsch for a goal early in the
fourth stanza to cut the lead to two and
then scored himself off a feed from Hipple
with 4:31 left to tie the score at
6-6.
Blue
Hen freshman Vincent Giordano, last week's
Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of
the Week, then put the Hens ahead for the
first time since early in the first
quarter on a goal off a feed from Howard
with 3:53 left for a 7-6 lead.
But
Rutgers rallied to win it as Flanagan fed
Mooney for a goal with 1:54 left to knot
the score at 7-7 and Lovejoy followed with
the game-winner just 69 seconds later.
The
game featured five ties with three coming
in the first half. Hipple scored his 50th
career goal one minute into the second
quarter to tie it at 2-2 and after Doctor
scored to give the Scarlet Knights at 3-2
lead, Delaware's Dave Powers sent the game
into intermission tied at 3-3 on a goal
with 5:33 left. Rutgers scored three goals
in a span of three minutes early in the
third quarter to take a 6-3 lead before
Delaware's comeback.
