Hens Overpower Saint Joseph's to Win
Season Opener 18-3

(February 12, 2005) -- Senior midfielder
Dave Powers (right) recorded his first
career hat trick and also dished out an
assist and five other Blue Hen players
netted two goals each as the University of
Delaware men's lacrosse squad had no
trouble winning its 2005 season opener
with an 18-3 victory over Saint Joseph's
Saturday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.
The game
was the first men's collegiate game played
this season, marking the second straight
year that Delaware and Saint Joseph's met
in the nation's first official game.
Delaware has now downed Saint Joseph's in
all five meetings.
Powers,
who entered the season with just three
goals in his career, was one of 11
Delaware players to appear in the scoring
column as the Hens (1-0) posted their
highest scoring total since an 18-8 win
over Manhattan in 2003. The 15-goal
winning margin was the highest for
Delaware since a 25-5 victory over
Hartford in 1999.
Jordan
Hall scored two goals and dished out two
assists, Joe Trentzsch scored twice and
had one assist, and Andy Hipple, Dan
Deckelbaum, and Marty Kupprion each scored
two goals on the day. Micardo Celicourt,
Alex Smith, and Cam Howard each scored
once and dished out an assist in the
balanced effort.
Saint
Joseph's (0-1) got goals from Keegan
Wilkinson, Andrew Four, and Mike O'Neill.
Delaware enjoyed a wide 47-13 advantage in
shots and 52-24 in groundballs.
Delaware
wasted little time in getting on the board
as Smith won the opening faceoff and fired
a shot past SJU goalkeeper Dan Morrissey
just six seconds into the game. The goal
was the fastest to start a game in
Delaware history, surpassing a goal eight
seconds into the game by Keevin Galbraith
vs. Army in 2001.
The Hens
went up 2-0 on a goal by Howard with 3:26
remaining in the first half but Saint
Joseph's answered with its first score as
Andrew Four tallied to cut the lead to 2-1
to end the first quarter. Powers scored
his first goal just under three minutes
into the second quarter, but the Hawks
countered with a goal by O'Neill with 8:48
left to cut the lead to 3-2.
But it was
all Delaware after that as the Hens reeled
off six straight goals, including one by
Powers, to end the half up 9-2. SJU
finally ended an 18-minute scoring drought
with a goal from Wilkinson with 5:07 left
in the third period, but the Hens came
back to score the final eight goals of the
game.
