Saturday
DATE:
April 29, 2005
NEWARK, DE
-- The 19th ranked University of Delaware
men's lacrosse squad will close out the
regular season schedule Saturday night at
7 p.m. at Rullo Stadium as the Blue Hens
host St. John's in the annual Delaware
Lacrosse Foundation Youth Day and Milt
Roberts Day Game.
In
addition, Delaware will honor its nine
seniors - Micardo Celicourt, Chris Collins
(right), Andy Hipple, Chris Willits, Dave
Powers, Joe Trentzsch, and Ian Wright,
Greg Grevey, and Bob Meunier - prior to
the game.
A full day
of activities at Rullo Stadium will be
sponsored by the Delaware Lacrosse
Foundation, which supports, promotes, and
expands the sport of lacrosse for boys and
girls youth programs in the state of
Delaware. Prior to the Delaware vs. St.
John's game, Delaware state high school
powers Cape Henlopen and Caesar Rodney
will square off at 3:30 p.m.
The day
also honors the late Milt Roberts, a
Delaware native who co-founded and coached
the men's lacrosse program at the
University of Delaware following an
All-American playing career at Johns
Hopkins University. In addition to his
contributions as a player and coach,
Roberts was a noted historian of the game
and is a member of the National Lacrosse
Hall of Fame, the Delaware Sports Museum
and Hall of Fame, and the University of
Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame. Milt's
son, Steve, will be on hand at the game to
present the game Most Valuable Player
Award.
Delaware,
which had its game this past Wednesday vs.
Yale cancelled due to rain and lightning,
brings a record of 9-4 and a two-game
winning streak into the contest. The Hens
have already clinched the No. 1 seed in
the Colonial Athletic Association
Tournament and will host No. 4 seed
Hofstra in the semifinals May 4 at 7 p.m.
at Rullo Stadium. Should the Hens with
that game, they would host the winner of
the other semifinal between Towson and
Villanova May 7 at 7 p.m. The CAA champion
earns an automatic berth into the NCAA
Tournament.
Delaware's
balanced scoring attack, which ranks No. 1
in the CAA in scoring with 11.08 goals per
game, is led by Jordan Hall, who leads the
team with 37 points on 21 goals and 16
assists.
St.
John's, playing its first season at the
varsity level since dropping the sport
after the 1994 campaign, enters the game
with a record of 2-10 and seven straight
losses since a 9-4 win over Hartford on
March 16. The Red Storm is led by Justin
O'Donnell's team-high 17 goals.
