NEWARK, DE -- Everyone got into the act for the University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team Saturday afternoon as Marty Kupprion scored a career-high five goals and was one of 12 different players to score a goal as the No. 11 ranked Blue Hens outscored No. 18 Albany for an 18-11 non-league victory Saturday afternoon at sun-drenched Rullo Stadium.
Kupprion (Episcopal/Wallingford, PA - at right), who scored four goals in two other games this season, led the scoring parade as the Blue Hens (7-0) scored six straight goals to break a 6-6 tie early in the second quarter and moved on for the victory. Delaware’s 7-0 start is the school’s best since the 1999 team began the year 8-0 on the way to the NCAA quarterfinals. In addition to having 12 different players score goals, eight different players also dished out assists for the Blue Hens.
Cam Howard, who scored a point for the 11th straight game, scored twice and dished out an assist, Drew Turner tallied his first two goals of the season, and Vincent Giordano, Chris Hichborn, Matt Messina, and Jordan Hall all had a goal and an assist. Hall’s goal came off the opening faceoff and was scored just three seconds into the game, breaking the school and NCAA record for fastest goal to start a game held by current teammate Alex Smith. Smith shared the record with a goal six seconds into a win over Saint Joseph’s in 2005.
Delaware outshot Albany 56-34 and held a 44-30 advantage in groundballs with Smith, who also scored a goal, winning 27 of 33 faceoffs. Blue Hen goalkeeper Tommy Scherr recorded 11 saves.
Albany, which has won the last three America East conference titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament each year, fell to 1-2 despite a five-goal effort from Frank Resetarits. Resetarits, who was coming off a six-goal performance in a 14-9 win over Siena, also dished out an assist. Merrick Thomson added three goals and and an assist and Mike Ammann and Jordan Levine each dished out two assists. Goalkeeper Brett Queener posted 18 saves and also scored his second goal of the season.

The Hens broke away from a 1-1 tie by scoring three straight goals, but the Great Danes outscored the Hens 4-1 over a stretch of six minutes to tie the game at 5-5 with 22 seconds left.
Albany tied the game for the third time at 6-6 just over two minutes into the second stanza when Resetarits scored his third goal of the game, but the Hens answered by scoring six straight goals over a 10-minute span to take control at 12-6. Giordano put the Hens ahead for good with his goal at the 11:39 mark and Kupprion scored two of his goals during the run. Resetarits scored his fourth goal just before the halftime horn to cut the lead to 12-7.
Resetarits scored his fifth goal with 5:54 left in the third quarter to narrow the lead to four at 12-8, but Delaware answered with goals by Kupprion and Dan Deckelbaum to take a 14-8 advantage into the final quarter. Albany never got closer than five goals the remainder of the contest.
