WASHINGTON -- An undefeated season for the University of Delaware men’s lacrosse squad came to an end Wednesday afternoon as the 12th ranked Blue Hens suffered their first setback of the year with an 11-5 loss to No. 8 Georgetown at the Hoyas’ Multi-Sport Field.
Dave Paolisso scored two of his game-high three goals as part of Georgetown’s 5-0 start and the Hoyas never looked back in handing the Blue Hens (7-1) their first loss of the season.
Delaware, whose seven wins is the most of any NCAA Division I team in the country, was off to its best start since the 1999 NCAA Tournament quarterfinal squad began the season with an 8-0 mark.
Georgetown, which is now 5-0 all-time against the Hens, improved to 3-1 with the win. After jumping out to leads of 5-0 and 8-1, the Hoyas never let Delaware get closer than five goals the rest of the way. Paolisso led the way with three goals and assist while Peter Cannon had two goals and an assist, Trevor Casey scored twice, Brendan Cannon had a goal and an assist, and Matt McBride dished out two assists.
Delaware junior Cam Howard (at right) extended his point-scoring streak to 12 games as he scored a team-high two goals while Chris Hichborn recorded a goal and an assist and Jordan Hall and Beau Davis each tallied a goal. Goalkeeper Tommy Scherr recorded a season-high 15 saves while Alex Smith, the NCAA leader in faceoff percentage, won 12 of 20 faceoffs and also dished out an assist. Delaware junior Marty Kupprion, the Hens’ leading goal scorer with 19 entering the game, was held scoreless for the first time this season.
The Hoyas outshot the Hens 46-19 and held a 40- 35 advantage in groundballs for the game. Georgetown held Delaware to its lowest goal-total of the season and its lowest in a game since a 13-3 loss to Hofstra last season.
Georgetown jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter, getting goals from Scott Kahoe, Peter Cannon, and Paolisso and extended that lead to 5-0 after a Paolisso goal with 7:41 left in the first half. Delaware finally got on the board with a goal by Hichborn with 6:20 remaining, but Brendan Cannon tallied with just 53 seconds left in the first half to send Georgetown into halftime up 6-1.
After the Hoyas increased the lead to 8-1 with 9:01 left in the third quarter, Delaware pulled to within five goals twice in the second half. Hall scored just 18 seconds into the final quarter to cut the margin to 9-4 and Howard scored his second goal of the game with 10:56 remaining to pull to within 10-5 but the Hens could never get closer.
Delaware will look to get back on the winning track this Saturday when the Blue Hens host Butler University at 1 p.m. at Rullo Stadium.
