ALBANY, NY -- The No. 10 ranked University of Delaware men’s lacrosse squad lost its first game of the season Saturday afternoon as No. 4 ranked Albany broke away from a tie game at halftime and moved on for a 13-7 non-league win at Fallon Field.
Albany, which remained undefeated at 3-0, scored six straight goals in a span of 16-minute span to break away and post the victory over the Blue Hens in the top 10 showdown.
Delaware, off to a 5-0 start for the second straight year and looking for its first 6-0 start since 1999, suffered its first loss of the season and fell to a top 20 ranked opponent for the 18th straight time since the 1999 season. The Blue Hens had defeated Albany each of the last three seasons, including an 18-11 victory last season in Newark, DE.
Senior Adam Zuder-Havens (at right) led the Blue Hens with three goals and one assist while Beau Davis, Chris Hichborn, Sean Calabrese, and Jordan Hall each scored a goal, Alex Smith won 14 of 24 faceoffs, and goalkeeper Tommy Scherr turned back 13 shots. Smith increased his career faceoff win total to 832, just six shy of the UD record, while Hall extended his streak of scoring a point to 21 games and Deckelbaum scored a point for the 16th straight contest.
Delaware senior Cam Howard, a three-time All-Colonial Athletic Association selection and the team’s leading scorer a year ago, saw his first action of the season after suffering a knee injury during fall drills. He had one shot on goal but did not score, snapping a streak of 23 straight games with at least one point.
Albany, which outshot Delaware 50-31, got five goals from Merrick Thomson while Frank Resetarits and Steve Amman each scored twice and Mike Amman had a goal and an assist. Starting goalkeeper Brett Queener posted the win with 11 saves in the net.
Albany jumped out to a 3-1 lead after a goal by Liam Gleason with 4:40 left in the opening stanza, but the Hens rallied back with three straight goals, including two by Zuder-Havens, to take 4-3 lead. Zuder-Havens scored his third goal with 4:17 left in the first half to give the Hens a 5-4 lead, but Albany’s Kyle Brunk scored a man-up goal with just 31 seconds left in the half to knot the score at 5-5 at intermission.
Delaware took what became its last lead of the day just 2:08 into the third quarter as Hichborn scored an unassisted goal to give the Hens a 6-5 advantage. But the rest of the game belonged to Albany as Steve Amman scored with 6:14 left in the stanza to tie the game and Thomson followed with three goals as part of a 6-0 Great Dane run that extended the lead to 11-6 with 5:30 left in the game.
