NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware rallied back to take the lead early in the fourth quarter, but Georgetown scored the game’s final two goals, including the game-winner by Andrew Brancaccio with 4:38 left to play, as the No. 7 Hoyas upended the No. 14 Blue Hens in a men’s lacrosse top 20 showdown Wednesday night at Rullo Stadium.
Delaware (5-2), which got three goals and an assist from Adam Zuder-Havens (Corning East/Corning, NY), rallied back from a three-goal deficit to take the lead early in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t hold on and dropped its second straight game to a top 10 opponent. The Hens suffered their first loss Saturday with a 13-7 setback at No. 4 Albany.
Despite the loss, Delaware senior midfielder Alex Smith (Boys Latin/Timonium, MD - at right) became the all-time NCAA Division I leader in faceoff wins as he won 14 of 19 draws and upped his career total to 846, breaking the previous school and NCAA record of 838 by Steve Shaw in 1983-86. Shaw attended the game and helped honor Smith several minutes after the record was broken in the third quarter. A two-time All-American, Smith has now won 81.2 percent of his 160 faceoffs this season.
Andrew Baird led the Hoyas (3-1) with three goals and an assist while Brancaccio had two goals, Craig Dowd scored twice, and Brendan Cannon had a goal and three assists. Goalkeeper Miles Kass posted 13 saves for the win.
Zuder-Havens also dished out an assist while freshman D.J. Widlake scored twice and Dan Deckelbaum, Sean Calabrese, and Kyle Rotelli also scored for the Hens. Cam Howard dished out two assists and Jordan Hall also added an assist, extending his point-scoring streak to 21 games. Tommy Scherr posted 12 saves.
Georgetown jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead as Cullen Molinari and Dowd scored first quarter goals and Brancaccio and Baird scored in the second stanza. Delaware finally got on the board on a goal by Zuder-Havens with 5:34 left in the half, but Dowd and Widlake traded goals over the final five minutes and the Hoyas took a 5-3 advantage at the break.
Widlake and Zuder-Havens each scored a goal in the first six minutes of the third quarter to cut the lead to 5-4 before Georgetown extended the lead to 6-4 on a goal by Cannon with 4:40 left in the stanza. Zuder-Havens and Deckelbaum scored scored 17 seconds apart to tie the score at 6-6 and Baird scored with 2:16 left in the third quarter for a 7-6 Georgetown lead.
Delaware then took its first lead of the game as Rotelli scored with 1:38 left in the third quarter to knot the score at 7-7 and Calabrese took a feed from Howard and scored 3:13 into the final quarter for an 8-7 advantage. But that would be the only time the Hens led all night as Baird scored exactly a minute later to tie the score again at 8-8 and Brancaccio scored the game-winner just over six minutes later.
The Hens, who had a school record 12-game home win streak snapped, remained winless in six meetings all-time vs. Georgetown and lost to a top 10 ranked opponent for the 19th straight time since 1999.
