Fast Start Keeps No. 10 Blue Hens Undefeated with 19-5 Win over Mt. St. Mary's

athlete photoEMMITSBURG, MD -- Sophomore Chris Hichborn (at right) scored a career-high four goals and Dan Deckelbaum and Kevin Kaminski each tallied three times as No. 10 ranked University of Delaware scored the first nine goals of the game and never looked back in posting a 19-5 non-league men’s lacrosse victory over Mt. St. Mary’s Tuesday afternoon.

The Blue Hens, ranked No. 10 in this week’s United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association poll and No. 11 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse poll, got goals from 10 different players and improved to 5-0 for the second straight year and for just the third time in school history. Delaware will travel to No. 4 ranked Albany this Saturday in a showdown of top 10 powers.

Mt. St. Mary’s (0-1), which was playing its season opener, got two goals from Joe Bello but fell to Delaware for the 10th time without a win in the all-time series. The game was the first played at the Mountaineers’ new Waldron Family Stadium.

Delaware, which outshot Mt. St. Mary’s 51-22 and held a 51-21 advantage in groundballs, has now outscored its opponents 78-26 this season, including a 42-7 advantage in the first half, and recorded a 261-124 advantage in shots.

Hichborn, who entered the game with just eight career goals, led the Blue Hens with his four tallies, including three of Delaware’s first nine goals as part of the 9-0 start.

Deckelbaum notched his third hat-trick of the season and eighth of his career while Kaminski, a freshman, recorded his second three-goal game in the last three outings. Vincent Giordano and Martin Cahill each added two goals, Beau Davis, Brett Manney, and Marty Kupprion each had a goal and an assist, and Nick LoManto contributed two assists. Delaware’s two-time All-American faceoff specialist Alex Smith won 22 of 26 faceoffs.

Bello scored two goals to lead the Mountaineers while Ben Mundorf contributed a goal and an assist and goalkeeper Joe Zolezzi posted 11 saves. Mt. St. Mary’s posted a record of 7-9 a year ago.

Neither team scored during the first nine minutes of the game but the Hens got things started on a solo goal by Deckelbaum with 5:56 left in the opening quarter and Delaware scored three mores times the remainder of the stanza, including two by Hichborn, to go up 4-0. Delaware increased the lead to 9-0 before a goal by Bello with 1:59 left in the first half sent UD up 9-1 at the half.

The Hens increased the lead to 11-1 on goals by Deckelbaum and Hichborn to open the second half and another Deckelbaum goal sent Delaware into the final quarter up 13-4. Five straight goals to open the fourth quarter pushed the lead to 19-4.
