PHILADELPHIA -- University of Delaware men’s lacrosse standouts Tom Scherr (at right) and Curtis Dickson have been named to the Colonial Athletic Association All-Tournament team for their play in the Blue Hens’ CAA semifinal loss to Hofstra last Wednesday.
Scherr, a senior goalkeeper from Owings Mills, MD (Mt. St. Joseph’s HS) and Dickson, a sophomore attackman from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia (Riverside High School), were among 11 players named to the team in a vote by the participating coaches.
Hofstra defeated Delaware 9-7 in the semifinals Wednesday and captured the league’s automatic NCAA Tournament berth by knocking off top-seed and No. 11 ranked Drexel 10-9 in overtime Saturday night.
In addition to Scherr and Dickson, also named to the team were T.J. O’Donnell and John Lade of Villanova, Steve Grossi, Colin Ambler, and Bruce Bickford of Drexel, and Collin Stabler, Joseph Montemurro, and Jack Vivonetto of Hofstra. Hofstra midfielder Kevin Unterstein was named the Most Outstanding Player.
Scherr, who was named to the CAA All-Tournament team for the third time in his career, was outstanding in the nets vs. Hofstra, allowing just nine goals while posting 15 saves. For the season, he posted 205 saves for a .584 save percentage and recorded a 9.36 goals allowed average. He also was named to the second team All-CAA squad.
Dickson, who earned first team All-CAA honors and was runner-up for league Player of the Year honors, scored twice in the loss to Hofstra and also contributed a groundball\. He ended the season as the CAA’s leading scorer with 62 points on 46 goals and 16 assists.
Delaware finished the season with a record of 9-7 overall and placed third in the CAA standings with a record of 3-3. The Hens, who have posted five straight winning seasons, have appeared in the CAA Tournament each of the last five seasons and advanced to the league title game three times, winning the crown in 2007.
