NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware men’s lacrosse senior goalkeeper Tom Scherr, who earned impressive honors both athletically and academically during his career as a Blue Hen, has been recognized by the website hofmag.com.
A native of Owings Mills, MD (Mt. St. Joseph High School), Scherr (at right) was named one of The 15 Best Student-Athletes You’ve (Probably) Never Heard Of in an article by the site, which covers college athletics.
“Watching the big-time collegiate programs face-off in big-time, revenue generating sports, it can be easy to scoff at the notion of the student-athlete,” said hofmag.com writer Jacob E. Osterhout. “But that’s only a small percentage of NCAA athletics. Most college sports are played by athletes who are dedicated to excellence on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. We selected 15 graduating seniors you’ve never heard of, whose outstanding all-around performance legitimize the notion of the student-athlete.”
A co-captain and team Sportsmanship Award winner, Scherr not only earned second team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors and was named to the CAA All-Tournament team for the third straight year this spring, but was a Dean’s List student and earned his degree with honors in chemical engineering with a minor in mathematical sciences in May. He plans to continue his education in medical school.
In citing Scherr’s accomplishments, Osterhout wrote that “what is most impressive about Scherr is that he not only wins, but wins with class.”
A three-year starter in goal for the Blue Hens, Scherr posted 576 career saves to rank fourth all-time at UD and his career goals allowed per game average of 8.52 is a Delaware career record. He led the Blue Hens to a record of 9-7 in 2008 and played a pivotal role in leading Delaware to the CAA championship and a berth in the NCAA national semifinals in 2007. This spring he was named one of 10 men’s lacrosse finalists nationally for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award, which honors seniors in specific sports who excel in the classroom, on the field, and in the community.
In addition to Scherr, also honored were Shauna Stephenson of Purdue (soccer), Matt Dobbins of Jacksonville State (baseball), Rachel Dawson of North Carolina (field hockey), Mislav Hizak of Embry-Riddle (tennis), Max Pinto of Williams (baseball), P.J. Thiesen of St. Thomas (track and football), Lindsay Ippel of Millikin (basketball), Caroline Burckle of Florida (swimming), Roberto Castro of Georgia Tech (golf), Katie Heenan of Georgia (gymnastics), Tristan Murray of James Madison (soccer), Sarah Zerzan of Willamette (cross country), Sarak Kirkwood of Virginia (volleyball), and Dan VeNard of Notre Dame (ice hockey).
