RICHMOND, Va. -- The University of Delaware placed six men’s lacrosse players on the All-Colonial Athletic Association teams announced by the league office Friday, including three first team selections in attackman Curtis Dickson (top right), midfielder Martin Cahill (middle right), and defender Pat Dowling (bottom right).
In addition to Dickson, Cahill, and Dowling, midfielder Kevin Kaminski and faceoff specialist Tommy Lee earned second team honors and freshman attackman Grant Kaleikau earned a spot on the CAA All-Rookie team.
Hofstra sophomore Jay Card, who led the Pride to the CAA regular season title, was named Player of the Year while Villanova longstick midfielder Brian Karalunas was named Defensive Player of the Year, Drexel goalkeeper Mark Manos was tabbed as Rookie of the Year, and Villanova’s Mike Corrado and Hofstra’s Seth Tierney shared Coach of the Year honors.
Towson and Villanova will meet in the CAA title game Saturday. The Blue Hens finished the season with a 5-10 mark and fell a game short of qualifying for the CAA Tournament for the sixth straight season.
Dickson, a junior attackman and All-American from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia (Riverside High School), earned first team honors for the second straight year and was honored by the league for third straight season after making the All-Rookie team in 2007. He was the Blue Hens’ leading scorer and led the CAA in shots per game and points per game while ranking No. 2 in goals per game. He scored 33 goals and dished out 12 assists for 45 points on the season to lead the team in those categories for the second straight year and scored at least one point in all 15 games, extending his consecutive game scoring streak to 40 games - currently the fifth longest streak in NCAA Division I - over three seasons. He scored three or more goals five times and tallied his 100th career goal in the season finale vs. Drexel, becoming just the 13th player in UD history to reach that plateau.
Cahill, a junior from Malden, Mass. (The Governor’s Academy), also earned first team honors for the second straight year and was honored for the third time overall after being selected to the CAA All-Rookie team in 2007. He was the Hens’ second leading scorer this spring as he recorded 20 goals and four assists and was one of only 10 players in the league to record 20 or more goals. He also ranked No. 2 in the CAA in shots per game (7.40), had four man-up goals, and scored three or more goals three times, including a career-high four vs. Robert Morris. His 58 career goals ranks No. 2 among active UD players.
Dowling, a sophomore from Fairfield, Conn. (Fairfield Ludlowe HS), was one of only three sophomores placed on the first team and the only defenseman. He was dominating on close defense for the Hens all year as he started all 15 games, led the team with a school-record 22 caused turnovers, and scooped up 29 groundballs. He led a defense that ranked No. 4 in the league in scoring defense at 9.34 goals per game. A member of the CAA All-Rookie team a year ago, he is Delaware’s all-time leader in caused turnovers with 40 in just two seasons.
Kaminski, a sophomore from Wallingford, Pa. (Strath-Haven HS), enjoyed a solid season at midfielder after returning from a knee injury that forced him to miss all but three games during the 2008 campaign. He played in all 15 games this season as a member of Delaware’s top midfield unit and ranked No. 4 on the team in scoring with 18 points on 15 goals and three assists while recording 29 groundballs. He was also honored by the CAA in 2007 when he was named to the CAA All-Rookie team.
Lee, a junior from Victor, N.Y. (Hand HS), was among the top faceoff specialists in the country in 2009 as he won 150 of 251 chances for a winning percentage of .598. He led the CAA in faceoff winning percentage, edging CAA first team pick Mitchell Rosensweig, and ranked second in the league in groundballs with 90 (6.00 per game). He currently ranks No. 5 nationally in faceoffs pct. and No. 12 in groundballs. He also added two goals and two assists on the season.
Kaleikau, a freshman attackman from Germantown, Md. (Watkins Mills HS), was one of 11 players named to the CAA All-Rookie team and one of four attackmen. After a slow start in which he saw action in just one of the team’s first six games, Kaleikau became a key member of the Blue Hen attack unit at mid-season and started the final five games. He scored six points during the season with four goals and two assists and scooped up 10 groundballs while causing two turnovers. He scored two goals in the 7-6 win over Sacred Heart Apr. 8, including one that tied the game early in the fourth quarter.
Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw will return eight of his top 10 scorers, the team’s three starting defensemen, its two faceoff specialists, and its starting goalie for the 2010 season.
