PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team will be looking to keep its season alive Saturday as the Blue Hens travel to Vidas Field to take on the host Drexel University Dragons in a battle to see what team earns the fourth and final berth in the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association Tournament.
The game will begin at 3 p.m. and be televised live on the Comcast Network throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
The stakes will certainly be high for both teams as the Blue Hens (5-9, 2-3 CAA) and Dragons (6-7, 2-3 CAA) square off in the final regular season game for both teams with the winner earning the fourth and final berth in the CAA semifinals and the loser ending its season.
A win would give Delaware the No. 4 seed and send the Hens to No. 1 seed and No. 9 ranked Hofstra this Wednesday, Apr. 29 at Hempstead, N.Y. for the semifinals. A win by Drexel along with a victory by Hofstra over Villanova Saturday night will give the Dragons a No. 3 seed and send them to No. 2 Towson on Wednesday. Should Villanova defeat Hofstra, Drexel would be the No. 4 seed and head to Hofstra for the semifinals.
The championship game will be held at the site of the highest remaining seed Saturday, May 2 with the winner earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Delaware, coming off a 10-8 loss to Towson last Saturday, is looking to keep its impressive string of CAA Tournament appearances alive as the Hens have advanced to the league semifinals each of the last five seasons. The Hens won the CAA title in 2007 and also advanced to the league title game in 2005 and 2006 before falling to Hofstra in last year’s semifinals.
The Blue Hens, who have defeated Drexel two straight times, including a 12-11 win last year in Newark, Del., are led by All-American attackman Curtis Dickson, who has scored a team-high 31 goals and dished out 11 assists this season and has scored at least one point in 39 straight games since the 2007 season. The junior from British Columbia also needs just two goals to become the 13th player in UD history to record 100 for a career.
Martin Cahill backs Dickson in the scoring department with 20 goals this season while Josh Coveleski and Mark Steverson have tallied 11 and nine goals respectively. Tommy Lee leads the CAA in faceoffs with a winning pct. of 61.1 percent while sophomore Pat Dowling (at right) and goalkeeper Noah Fossner lead the defense. Dowling leads the Hens with 19 caused turnovers while Fossner has registered a 9.32 goals against average to go with a .573 save percentage.
Drexel, which fell to Delaware 11-7 in the 2007 CAA semifinals in the last meeting in Philadelphia, has won two straight and is coming off a 10-4 win at Sacred Heart last Saturday. The Dragons are led by offensively by Colin Ambler (18 goals) and Kyle Bergman (17 goals) while goalkeeper goalkeeper Mark Manos ranks second in the CAA in goals against average (8.26 gaa) and No. 1 in save percentage (.602).
