 ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A pair of former University of Delaware men’s lacrosse standouts reached the pinnacle of Major League Lacrosse success Sunday afternoon as Canadians John Grant and Jordan Hall led the Toronto Nationals to a 10-9 victory over the Denver Outlaws in the MLL Championship Game at the U.S. Naval Academy’s Navy-Marine Corps Stadium.
Grant, a native of Ontario who was named the USILA National Player of the Year for the Blue Hens in 1998-99 and MLL Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008, scored two goals and dished out an assist while Hall, from British Columbia and a two-time All-American for the Hens in in 2004-07, played midfield and had a shot on goal in leading Toronto to its first MLL title. Shawn Williams scored a goal with 45 seconds left to lead the Nationals to the win.
Grant, who missed all but one regular season game in 2009 with a knee injury, scored Toronto’s second goal in the first quarter and added his second 37 seconds into the final quarter to tie the game at 8-8. He also dished out an assist in the third quarter.
Toronto advanced to the championship game with a 14-13 win over the Long Island Lizards on Saturday, a game in which Hall dished out an assists and had two groundballs and Grant had a groundball and two shots on goals. In the other semifinal game Saturday, Denver defeated the Boston Cannons 11-10 despite the Cannons getting four goals from former UD standout Matt Alrich (‘03).
In addition to Grant, Hall, and Alrich, former UD three-time All-American Alex Smith earned All-MLL honors for the third straight year as he earned a spot on the team as a faceoff specialist playing for the Washington Bayhawks. The NCAA’s all-time faceoff leader, Smith went 217-368 this season in the face-off circle. For his career, Smith has a career regular season face-off winning percentage of 60 percent and is already sixth all-time in face-off wins with 665.
