MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Curtis Dickson (at right) and Martin Cahill each scored four goals to power the University of Delaware to a 12-10 Colonial Athletic Association men's lacrosse victory over host Robert Morris Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Hens (5-8, 2-2 CAA) won their second straight and evened their record in CAA play as Dickson and Cahill led the way. Delaware led from start to finish and has now downed the Colonials (8-6, 1-3 CAA) in all four meetings all-time, although this one was much closer than the average win margin of 15 goals over the previous three meetings.
Dickson, who extended his point-scoring streak to 38 straight games over three seasons and recorded his fifth hat trick of the season and 15th of his career, also dished out three assists while Cahill dished out an assist and freshman Grant Kaleikau had a goal and an assist. Cahill's four goals was also a career-high. Blue Hen goalkeeper Noah Fossner posted 16 saves to earn the win.
Kyle Buchanan and Dave Morton each scored three goals while Trevor Moore tallied two goals and Patrick Smith contributed a goal and an assist to lead Robert Morris. The Colonials, who outshot the Hens 47-41, also got 15 saves from goalkeeper Sal Barcia. Robert Morris, which suffered its first home loss in eight games this season, was coming off an 11-10 CAA win over Drexel last week that snapped an 18-game conference losing streak.
The win, which snapped Delaware’s 10-game road losing streak and six-game CAA road losing skein, moved the Hens closer to a berth in the four-team Colonial Athletic Association Tournament which will be held Apr. 29-May 1. The Hens will close out the league schedule hosting Towson next Saturday and traveling to Drexel April. 25.
Delaware got goals from Cahill, Mark Steverson, and Kevin Kaminski in the first seven minutes and never looked back in posting the win. Robert Morris did not get on the board until Smith scored with 4:32 left in the quarter, but the Hens came right back on a goal by Kaleikau 10 seconds later to take a 4-1 advantage after one quarter.
Cahill’s second goal of the game off a Dickson feed with 10:10 left in the first half put the Hens up 5-2, but the Colonials narrowed the gap to 5-3 at the break when Moore scored his first goal of the game at the 8:52 mark.
Goals by Dickson and Cahill to start the third quarter increased the UD lead to 7-3 but Robert Morris kept pace behind consecutive goals from Morton and Moore. Dickson scored his third goal of the game with 8:10 left in the quarter, but Morton answered with 4:15 left in the stanza to put the Delaware at lead at 8-6.
The Hens put the game away in the final stanza as Dickson and Cahill once again got things started with goals in the first 2:30 of the stanza. A goal by the Colonials’ Buchanan with 10:27 ended the streak, but the Hens came right back with goals from Dickson and Unthank to up the lead to an insurmountable 12-7 margin. Robert Morris scored three goals in the final 2:36, including two by Buchanan, but could never cut the lead to a single goal.
