STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Jordan McBride scored with 2:57 left in the second overtime as host Stony Brook handed the University of Delaware its third straight loss in a 10-9 setback in a men’s lacrosse thriller Saturday afternoon at LaValle Stadium.

The Blue Hens (2-5), who got a game-high four goals from All-American Curtis Dickson, had sent the game into overtime on a goal by Mark Steverson (at right) with 3:05 left in regulation but Delaware could not reach the back of the net again as the Seawolves won for the second straight year.

McBride, who torched the Hens for 10 goals in leading Stony Brook to a 16-14 win last season in Newark, dashed Delaware’s hopes again as he took a feed from Tom Compitello and scored his third goal of the game with just under three minutes left in the second extra session to send the Seawolves (3-2) to their third straight victory after opening the season 0-2.

Dickson, who had a school-record three-year streak of 30 straight games with a goal snapped in a 12-6 loss to No. 11 Georgetown Tuesday night, extended his point-scoring streak to 33 straight games and increased his team leading goal total to 18 this season. He also posted his 13th career hat trick, including his third this season.

Kevin Kaminski added two goals and an assist for Delaware while Martin Cahill scored twice and Andrew Unthank dished out an assist for the Hens, who held a 49-35 advantage on shots, scooped up five more groundballs, and had four few turnovers than Stony Brook. Blue Hen goalkeeper Noah Fossner posted 15 saves.

Delaware had won six of its last seven overtime games, including an 8-7 triple overtime win over Albany last season. The game marked only the seventh double overtime game in Blue Hen history.

Stony Brook, a member of the America East conference, also got three goals from Timmy Trenkle and three assists from Compitello while goalkeeper Charlie Paar made 17 saves and Adam Rand won 10 of 13 faceoffs against one of the nation’s top faceoff units in Delaware’s Tommy Lee and Dan Cooney. The Seawolves also converted on two extra man situations while Delaware was 0 for 5.

Neither team led by more than two goals the entire contest the matchup featured six ties and four lead changes. Stony Brook took a 2-0 lead but Delaware struck back with four straight, including two by Dickson, to go up 4-2 midway through the second quarter. But Stony Brook countered with three straight of its own, including a goal by Kevin Crowley with just 11 seconds left in the first half to give the Seawolves a 5-4 lead at the break.

Delaware got goals from Kaminski and Cahill to start the second half to put the Hens back up 6-5 but Steven Waldeck and Kyle Belton came back for Stony Brook to give the Seawolves a 7-6 advantage. A goal by Dickson with 52 seconds left in the third stanza tied it up at 7-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

Trenkle scored two goals just under a minute apart early in the fourth quarter to give Stony Brook the lead again at 9-7 but Dickson scored with 4:11 left to narrow the deficit to one and Steverson sent the game into extra sessions with his goal at the 3:05 mark. Delaware had four shots on goal after that but could not convert.

After a scoreless first sudden-death overtime period that featured three shots by Stony Brook and four by Delaware, the game moved into a second four-minute overtime. Rand won the opening faceoff against Delaware’s Cooney and the Seawolves held the ball until McBride scored the game winner just over a minute in.
