BALTIMORE -- Following a week that saw the University of Delaware men’s lacrosse squad split a pair of non-league road games, the Blue Hens moved to No. 16 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Coaches Association Top 20 poll and to No. 18 in the LAXNews media poll.
The Hens (3-1) opened last week with a 15-7 setback to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore before using a six-goal rally in the second half to defeat Hartford 11-9 on Saturday in West Hartford, Conn. Delaware dropped three spots from No. 13 in the USILA poll and one spot from No. 18 in the LAXNews poll. The Nike/Inside Lacrosse poll will be announced on Tuesday.
Delaware will continue action this Saturday when the Hens host Albany (0-1) at 1 p.m. in Delaware Stadium. For the first time in school history the Hens will play their entire home schedule at Delaware Stadium and its new FieldTurf surface. The game will be the Hens’ first in the 22,000-season stadium since the 1998 season.
Defending national champion Syracuse (2-0) remained in the top spot in the USILA poll as the Orange earned 200 points and all 10 first place votes. Virginia remained at No. 2 followed by Notre Dame, North Carolina, Johns Hopkins, Maryland, Princeton, Cornell, Duke, and Loyola in the Top 10. Hofstra was at No. 11 followed by Massachusetts, Bucknell, Georgetown, Harvard, Delaware, Stony Brook, UMBC, Brown, and Lafayette. The Hens have played or will play five teams currently in the Top 20 this season.
Syracuse also remained at No. 1 in the LAXNews poll followed by Virginia, North Carolina, Johns Hopkins, Notre Dame, Cornell, Duke, Maryland, Princeton, Hofstra, Loyola, Harvard, Georgetown, Bucknell, Massachusetts, Navy, Brown, Delaware, UMBC, and Denver.
Delaware is led by offensively by senior All-American attackman Curtis Dickson, who ranks among the national leaders in scoring with 16 goals and 6 assists for 22 points and by Martin Cahill (11 goals). Sophomore Grant Kaleikau (at right) scored a goal in the Hartford game.
