Delaware Men
Laxers Down Drexel; Claim America East Conference
Crown
NEWARK, DE -- Sean Carney
scored four goals and John Grant added three goals
and two assists as the University of Delaware clinched its
first America East conference championship since 1994 with a
13-4 men's lacrosse victory over Drexel at Rullo Stadium
Saturday night.
The No. 7 ranked Blue Hens (11-2, 4-0
America East) got goals from eight different players on the
way to defeating the Dragons (5-6, 1-3) for the 20th
straight time since 1979. The game was the 50th meeting
between the local rivals. Delaware has now captured 19
conference titles in school history, including 10 in 21
seasons under head coach Bob Shillinglaw.
Grant, the nation's leading scorer with
43 goals and 40 assists, scored two of his goals in the
first quarter in leading the Hens to a 4-0 lead after the
first stanza. His five points gave him 83 for the season,
breaking the Delaware single season record of 78 set by
Anthony DiMarzo in 1996.
Neither team scored in the first seven
minutes of the game until Carney got the Hens on the board
off a feed from Kevin Lavey with 8:03 left. Carney
added another scored seven minutes later.
Drexel scored its first goals with 9:31
left in the first half on a goal by Jason Kilpatrick but
still trailed 9-1 at intermission. The Dragons did not score
again until Jeff Iannarino scored with 2:50 left in the
third quarter.
Ron Jedlicka posted eight saves in
the nets for Delaware, which also got a goal and assist from
both Jim Bruder and Kevin Lavey. Dennis
DeBusschere scored a goal for the 13th straight time
with a fourth quarter conversion for the Blue
Hens.
