Top ranked Loyola Cools Down Delaware 19-11 in Men's Lacrosse

BALTIMORE -- Top ranked Loyola cooled down a hot start by the University of Delaware and moved on for a 19-11 men's lacrosse victory over the Blue Hens in Top 10 showdown Wednesday at Curley Field.

The seventh-ranked Blue Hens (10-2), who jumped out to a 5-0 lead, lost just their second game of the season while the Greyhounds (10- 0) remained the nation's only unbeaten team thanks to a second quarter scoring explosion.

Sean Carney led the Hens with three goals while Dennis DeBusschere, Kevin Lavey, and Jason Lavey each scored twice and Jim Bruder had a goal and four assists for the nation's top ranked offense. Todd Vizcarrondo, Kyle Campbell, Gewas Schindler, Tim Goettelmann, and Tim O'Shea each netted three goals while Vizcarrondo and Mark Frye each dished out three assists for Loyola.

Loyola, the nation's No. 1 ranked defense, clamped down on national player of the year candidate John Grant, holding the nation's leading point scorer to just one assist. However, Grant upped his season total to 78 points to tie Anthony DiMarzo (1996) for the UD record for points in a season. Grant had a 13-game goal-scoring streak snapped and suffered the second lowest point total of his career. Loyola held him without a point last season.

Early on, it looked as if the Hens were primed to upset Loyola and claim their first ever win over a No. 1 ranked team. The Hens scored the game's first five goals, going up 5-0 with 8:25 left in the first quarter. Loyola stopped the streak two minutes later to cut the lead to 5-1, but Jason Lavey added a goal to put the lead back up to 6-1.

It was all Loyola after that. The Greyhounds scored the last two goals of the first quarter, the second by Schindler with eight seconds left in the stanza, then scored the first six goals of the second quarter. The Greyhounds took the lead at 7-6 on a goal by O'Shea with 12:56 left before halftime and went into intermission up 12-8. Loyola kept up the momentum by scoring the first five goals of the second half and cruised from there.
