DeBusschere Goal Lifts UD Past Penn State in Men's Lacrosse Top 10 Battle

NEWARK, DE -- Dennis DeBusschere scored off a feed from John Grant with 1:11 left to play to lift No. 7 ranked University of Delaware to a thrilling 12-11 men's lacrosse victory over No. 9 Penn State Saturday night at Rullo Stadium.

DeBusschere, a senior, scored from 10 yards out to cap a hard-fought game between two teams vying for a long-awaited NCAA Tournament berth. The Blue Hens (10-1) won their second straight out game while the Nittany Lions (8-3) had a four-game win streak snapped. Delaware, the nation's top offensive team at 16 goals per game, is now 7-1 at home this season.

The game featured four ties and three lead changes and neither team led by more than two goals from the second quarter on. Six of the last seven games between these two fierce rivals has been decided by one goal.

Grant, an All-American and the nation's leading scorer at 7.2 points per game (77 total), scored four goals and dished out an assist, Kevin Lavey added four goals, and DeBusschere scored twice to lead the Blue Hens, who travel to No. 1 ranked Loyola Wednesday.

Penn State got two goals each from John Chescavage, Will Driscoll, Ted Holmes, and Chris Schiller. Schiller also dished out two assists.

Delaware jumped out to a 3-0 lead but the Nittany Lions quicky fought back to cut the first quarter Blue Hen lead to 5-4. Penn State took a 8-6 lead into halftime as it overcame a 6-5 deficit by scoring the final three goals of the second quarter.

Penn State led by two goals twice in the third quarter, the second time at 10-8 with 5:04 left in the stanza. But Lavey scored with 2:02 left in the quarter and added another score five minutes into the final stanza to tie the game at 10-10. Chris Purpura scored his first goal in over a month to give Delaware an 11-10 lead with 7:51 left but Penn State answered on a goal by Don Mayerhofer with 4:28 left to forge another tie at 11-11.

DeBusschere, the son of NBA Hall of Famer Dave DeBusschere, scored the game-winner just three minutes later.
