Hang On, Down North Carolina,
18-16
NEWARK, DE - All-American John
Grant, the nation's leading scorer entering the game,
had four goals and seven assists for a career-high 11 points
as No. 6 ranked University of Delaware built a big halftime
lead and held on for an 18-16 men's lacrosse win over No. 15
North Carolina Sunday at Rullo Stadium.
The Blue Hens, coming off their first
loss of the season Wednesday to No. 8 Georgetown, improved
to 9-1 on the season despite being outshot 58-32. The
10-game start is the best in school history. The Tar Heels
(6-7), playing their third game in five days, got five goals
each from Matt Crofton and Justin Bowman.
Delaware, which got a team-high five
goals from Jim Bruder and three from Dennis
DeBusschere, struck early and often on its way to a 14-5
lead at halftime, outscoring the Tar Heels 6-1 in the second
quarter alone. The Hens built that lead to 16-5 three
minutes into the third quarter as Bruder scored two quick
goals. But North Carolina failed to give in and almost
rallied for the comeback.
Following Bruder's second goal, North
Carolina scored the final five goals of the stanza to cut
the lead to 16-10 heading into the final quarter. Crofton
(three goals) and Bowman (two) accounted for all five scores
during the stretch.
Bruder's fifth goal of the game with 9:20
left to play put the Hens up 18-11, but back came the Tar
Heels once again. North Carolina scored the final five goals
of the game, including three by Bowman, to cut the lead to
18-16 with 28 seconds left.
Grant, who entered the game No. 1 in the
nation with 61 points, upped his total to 72 as he scored a
career-high 11 points, including a career-high tying seven
assists. Kevin Lavey added two goals for Hens while
Chase Martin contributed three goals to the UNC
effort.
