Grant Leads Delaware to Win over Gannon in Lacrosse

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware men's lacrosse team got its 1999 season off to a flying start as All-American John Grant (Kenner/Hanmer, Ontario) scored five goals and assisted on four others to lead the Blue Hens to a season-opening 19-8 win over Gannon Tuesday night at Rullo Stadium.

The game was the first ever for the Blue Hens at the new $2.2 million lighted, ActionTurf field. The Hens open America East Conference play Saturday vs. Hartford at home.

The Blue Hens, ranked No. 10 in this week's Baltimore Sun poll after a 9-6 record a year ago, jumped out to a 7-1 lead midway through the second quarter and never looked back in posting the easy win.

Senior Kevin Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington St.,NY) added four goals and younger brother Jason Lavey chipped in with two goals and an assist to lead the charge as nine different UD players scored. Senior Sean Carney (Lakeland-Panas/Yorktown, NY) and Jim Bruder (Malvern/Villanova, PA) each added two goals.

Gannon, which will move up to NCAA Division I next season, fell to 1-2 despite a goal and four assists from Mike Sero. Goalkeeper Derrick Kravitz stopped 29 shots. The game featured a total of 21 penalties for 19 minutes.
