Grant Leads Delaware to Win over
Gannon in Lacrosse
NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware men's lacrosse
team got its 1999 season off to a flying start as
All-American John Grant (Kenner/Hanmer, Ontario)
scored five goals and assisted on four others to lead the
Blue Hens to a season-opening 19-8 win over Gannon Tuesday
night at Rullo Stadium.
The game was the first ever for the Blue Hens at the new
$2.2 million lighted, ActionTurf field. The Hens open
America East Conference play Saturday vs. Hartford at
home.
The Blue Hens, ranked No. 10 in this week's Baltimore Sun
poll after a 9-6 record a year ago, jumped out to a 7-1 lead
midway through the second quarter and never looked back in
posting the easy win.
Grant, who led the team and ranked among the national
leaders with 67 points a year ago, picked right up where he
left off last season, scoring three goals and adding two
assists in the third quarter. The Hens outscored the Knights
7-4 in that stanza.
Senior Kevin Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington
St.,NY) added four goals and younger brother Jason
Lavey chipped in with two goals and an assist to lead
the charge as nine different UD players scored. Senior
Sean Carney (Lakeland-Panas/Yorktown, NY) and Jim
Bruder (Malvern/Villanova, PA) each added two goals.
Gannon, which will move up to NCAA Division I next
season, fell to 1-2 despite a goal and four assists from
Mike Sero. Goalkeeper Derrick Kravitz stopped 29 shots. The
game featured a total of 21 penalties for 19 minutes.
