Georgetown Snaps UD Win Streak in Lacrosse, 16-9

NEWARK, DE -- No. 8 ranked Georgetown broke open a close game by scoring four straight goals to start the second half on the way to a 16-9 men's lacrosse victory over No. 6 University of Delaware Wednesday night at Rullo Stadium, snapping the Blue Hens' 11-game win streak.

Andy Flick scored four goals, including two in the pivotal opening minutes of the second half, Scott Doyle tallied three goals, Scott Urick had two goals and three assists, and Greg McCavera added two goals and four assists to lead the Hoyas (7-2) to their second straight victory.

The Hens (8-1), one of just three unbeaten teams in NCAA Division I entering the day, had a school-record 11-game win streak, the longest current streak in the nation, snapped. John Grant, the nation's leading point scorer at 7.1 per game, and Dennis DeBusschere each scored three goals while Jay Motta tallied twice for the Hens. Georgetown held second leading scorer Sean Carney (34 points) scoreless. It was the Hens'first loss since a 10-4 loss to Loyola last April 18.

Georgetown goalkeeper Brian Hole was superb in goal, stopping 18 shots and holding the nation's top scoring team seven goals under its average.

The Hoyas built a 6-2 lead with 7:23 left in the second quarter, but the Hens stormed back with three straight goals, two by Grant, to close the half down 6-5. But Georgetown struck quickly in the second half, scoring four unanswered goals in the first 3:05 of the stanza. Delaware came back to cut the lead to 10-7 with 5:06 left in the quarter, but the Hoyas came back with five straight goals to put the game away.
