Delaware Lacrosse Downs
Hofstra, Best Start Since 1976
HEMPSTEAD, NY -- John Grant connected for
four goals as the No. 14 ranked University of Delaware men's
lacrosse team continued its best start since 1976 with a
13-7 America East victory over No. 17 Hofstra Saturday at
Hofstra Stadium.
The Blue Hens (3-0, 2-0) are off to their best start
since the 1976 team started 3-0 on the way to an 11-1
record. Hofstra (0-2, 0-1), the four-time defending America
East champion, lost its first ever conference game since
joining the league, ending a streak of 21 straight wins.
After Hofstra took a 3-2 first quarter lead, the Hens
scored three straight goals, one each by Grant, Kevin
Lavey, and Dennis DeBusschere, to start the
second quarter and never looked back. The Dutchmen cut the
lead to 8-6 with 7:53 left in the third quarter, but the
Hens answered with five unanswered goals, two by Grant, to
put the game away. It was the Hens' first win over Hofstra
since 1991.
Grant, who also added an assist, now has scored 20 points
in three games, including 12 goals. DeBusschere and Kevin
Lavey each added three goals for the Hens while Jason
Lavey had two goals and an assist and Jim Bruder
had two assists. Chad Eisenhart led Hofstra with two
goals.
Delaware senior goalkeeper Ron Jedlicka came up
with a brilliant effort, posting 20 saves for the Hens, who
won despite just a 46-44 advantage in shots on goal.
The Hens return to action next Saturday when they travel
to Indianapolis, IN to take on Butler.
