Grant Leads UD Men's Laxers Over Mt. St. Mary's, 14-9

EMMITSBURG, MD -- John Grant scored four goals and assisted on three others and Dennis DeBusschere scored a career-high four goals as No. 8 ranked University of Delaware won its eighth straight game with a 14-9 non-league men's lacrosse win at Mt. St. Mary's Wednesday afternoon.

The Blue Hens, now 5-0 and off to their best start since beginning 5-0 in 1972, have now won eight games since last season and are one of just five undefeated teams in NCAA Divsion I. The No. 8 ranking ties the highest rank ever for the Blue Hens. The host Mounties had a two-game win streak snapped to fall to 3-2.

Jim Bruder added two goals, Kevin Lavey had two goals and two assists, Jason Lavey had a goal and two assists, and Sean Carney dished out three assists for the Blue Hens, who outshot the Mount 55-27 and converted on 4 of 10 extra man possession. Mt. St. Mary's got three goals from Steve Ricker, two goals from Doug Thompson, and two goals and two assists from Nick DeFelice. Goalkeeper Sean Elder posted 23 saves.

Delaware took a 7-4 halftime lead and went up 10-4 early in the third on goals by Kevin Lavey, Jason Lavey, and Grant. But Mt. St. Mary's came back and cut the lead to 12-8 to end the period as DeFelice scored two late goals. Delaware then put the clamps down, holding Mt. St. Mary's scoreless until Ricker scored with one second left to play.

Delaware will host No. 10 ranked Navy Sunday at 1 p.m. at Rullo Stadium.
