Delaware Men Laxers Down Penn 14-11;

Await NCAA Tourney Bid

PHILADELPHIA -- Seniors John Grant, Kevin Lavey, Jim Bruder, and Dennis DeBusschere accounted for all of the University of Delaware's goals as the Blue Hen men's lacrosse team equalled the best regular season in school history with a 14-11 win over host Pennsylvania Saturday at Franklin Field.

The No. 7 ranked Blue Hens improved to 13-2 with their third straight win, tying the school record for wins in a season set by 1979 team (13-2), while the Quakers finished their season at 6-8.

Delaware, which made its only NCAA Tournament appearance in 1984, will now await word to see who and where it will play in the opening round of the 12- team NCAA Tournament field to be announced Sunday, May 9, at 3:30 p.m.

Lavey and Grant each scored four goals to pace the Hens while Bruder and DeBusschere scored three times apiece. Lavey matched a season-high while Grant, a national player of the year candidate and the top scorer in the nation, upped his season point total to 96 with 49 goals and 47 assists. DeBusschere scored a goal for the 15th straight game.

Penn got three goals from Peter Janney and two more from Peter Scott while goalkeeper Matt Schroeder posted 21 saves.

The Hens broke open a close game thanks to the play of Lavey. Penn's Janney scored with 7:01 left to play to the game at 7-7, the fifth time of the game. But the Hens scored the last four goals of the period in the final four minutes, three by Lavey, to take an 11-7 cushion into the final quarter.

Penn cut the lead to 12-9 with 7:43 left to play, but Grant scored twice in a 27 second span in the closing minutes to put the game on ice for the Hens.
