Grant, Carney Lead UD Past Rutgers in Men's Lacrosse, 19-18

NEWARK, DE -- John Grant scored five goals and dished out five assists and Sean Carney added four scores and four assists as No. 8 ranked University of Delaware held off upset-minded Rutgers for a 19- 18 men's lacrosse win Saturday night at Rullo Stadium.

The Blue Hens, one of just three undefeated teams in NCAA Division I, improved to 7-0 for the best start in school history and extended their winning streak to 10 games, the longest current streak in the nation. Rutgers, which came into the game having never lost in Newark in six tries, dropped to 2-5 despite a six-goal, three-assist effort from Keith Cromwell.

Delaware, the No. 1 scoring team in the nation at 16.1 goals per game, jumped out to a 5-0 lead and it looked like it would be an easy time for the Hens. But the Scarlet Knights rallied back immediately, scoring six straight goals in a seven minute span in the second quarter, including three by Cromwell, to eventually take a 9-8 halftime lead.

The second half featured four ties and neither team ever led by more than four goals. Rutgers led 14-13 with 1:55 left in the third quarter, but Dennis DeBusschere (1 goal, 3 assists) fed Carney for two straight goals in 24 seconds to put the Hens up 16-13 to end the stanza.

Delaware extended the lead to 17-13 before Rutgers came storming back, scoring four straight goals, including two by Cromwell, to tie the game at 17-17 with 4:44 left. But Carney answered with a goal one minute later and Jay Motta took a faceoff all the way in for another score to put the Hens up 19-17 with 3:29 left. Rutgers cut the lead to 19-18 on a goal by David Schaller with 1:35 left, but couldn't score again.

Grant, the nation's No. 3 leading scorer, upped his season totals to 27 goals and 21 assists with a career-high 10 points. Carney also set a career-high with eight points for the Hens. Kevin Lavey added three goals and an assist and Jim Bruder scored two goals for the Hens.

Rutgers also got three goals from Paul Campanile and two each from Brad Mayer, Steve Snider, and Scott Massey.
