No. 6 Delaware Edges No. 15 Towson 17-16 in

Men's Lacrosse

NEWARK, DE -- Sean Carney scored a career-high six goals and the nation's leading scorer John Grant dished out a career-high seven assists to go with two goals as No. 6 ranked University of Delaware outlasted No. 15 Towson 17-16 in a wild America East men's lacrosse game Saturday night before a packed crowd of 2,500 at Rullo Stadium.

The Hens (8-0, 3-0 America East), off to the best start in school history, won their school record tying 11th straight game and snapped a personal nine-game losing streak to the Tigers. The Hens, who also won 11 straight games in 1979, downed the Tigers for the first time since 1989. Towson (3-4, 2-2) lost its fourth straight game, all to Top 20 opponents, despite five goals and four assists from Spencer Ford and five goals from Kevin Sturm.

The game matched the top two scoring offenses in NCAA Division I and it certainly lived up to the billing. Towson rallied back from a 9-5 halftime deficit as the teams combined to score 19 second half goals, including 12 in the fourth quarter.

Delaware led 11-7 with 10:41 left in the third quarter before Towson scored the final three goals of that stanza and the first of the fourth period for the only tie of the game at 11-11 with 14:34 left to play.

The Hens countered by scoring four of the next five goals to go up 15-12 with 6:02 left with Carney scoring twice and Grant scoring once and dishing out three assists during the run.

The Hens led 17-13 with 2:36 left but Towson scored the final three goals of the game, the last by Todd Paradise with seven seconds left. Sturm had the chance to tie the game but his shot from 20 yards out was saved by Ron Jedlicka just before the final horn.

Kevin Lavey and Dennis DeBusschere each scored three goals for Delaware.
