DELAWARE MEN’S LACROSSE DOWNS UMBC 12-11 IN OVERTIME IN OPENING ROUND OF NCAA TOURNAMENT

TOWSON, MD &endash; The University of Delaware’s first venture into the NCAA Tournament since 1984 proved to be an exciting, and successful, visit.

Senior Sean Carney capped a huge Delaware comeback, sending the game into overtime with 59 seconds left then winning the game on a goal 42 seconds into sudden death extra period to lift the No. 6 seed Blue Hens to a 12-11 win over 10th-ranked UMBC Sunday in an NCAA first round men’s lacrosse game at Towson University’s Minnegan Stadium.

The Blue Hens, who set a school record for wins in a season in improving to 14-2, stormed back from an 11-5 deficit with 13:24 left in regulation to post the victory, the team’s fourth straight of the season and first ever in NCAA play. The Retrievers (11-4), in the tournament for the second straight year, had an eight-game win streak snapped.

The win sends Delaware to the NCAA quarterfinals where the Hens will take on No. 3 seed University of Virginia next Sunday, May 23, at Princeton University. The winner advances to the NCAA semifinals May 29-31 at the University of Maryland.

Delaware All-American John Grant assisted on both Carney goals and finished with three goals and four assists on the day to become just the ninth player in NCAA Division I history to reach 100 points (103) in a season. He also set a new UD single season assist record with 51 to go along with 52 goals.

UMBC led 4-3 at halftime and went up 6-3 after scoring the first two goals of the third quarter. The Hens followed with goals by Grant and Kevin Lavey (three goals) before the Retrievers countered with five straight, two by Casey Hard, to take a 11-5 lead with 13:24 left to play in the fourth quarter.

But Delaware mounted a furious comeback. Dennis DeBusschere started the rally with a goal with 10:24 left to play, Kevin Lavey followed with two goals, Jason Lavey netted his third score of the game with 7:19 left, and Grant cut the lead to 11-10 with 5:08 left. Grant and Carney hooked up for the first time with 59 seconds left to play to send the game into overtime.

Delaware wasted little time in the extra session. Just 42 seconds into the four-minute sudden death period, Grant moved behind the net and found Carney open in front. Carney fired away from 10 yards out and UMBC goalkeeper Andrew Hampson initially saved it, only to have it trickle through his legs and into the net for the game-winner.

Dan Marohl added two goals, John Harasym had one goal and three assists, and Chris Turner added a goal and two assists for the Retrievers, who got 16 saves from Hampson. Delaware goalkeeper Ron Jedlicka collected 11 saves for the Blue Hens.
