Delaware Men Laxers Down Vermont 17-7; Go Unbeaten in America East Play

 

BURLINGTON, VT -- The University of Delaware completed a perfect season in America East play as senior attackman John Grant scored two goals and dished out seven assists to lead the Blue Hens to a 17-7 men's lacrosse win over host Vermont Wednesday afternoon at Centennial Field.

No. 7 ranked Delaware, which clinched its first America East title since 1994 Saturday vs. Drexel, improved to 12-2 (5-0 America East) and extended its two-year league winning streak to seven games. Vermont, which had won two of its last three games, fell to 4-9 (1-3) despite three goals from Joe Sheehan.

The Blue Hens, who close out the regular season Saturday at Penn, got two or more goals from six different players. Dennis DeBusschere led the way with three goals and two assists while Jason Lavey had two goals and two assists, Jim Bruder scored two goals, and Sean Carney and Ken Carrington each had two goals an Starting goalkeeper Ron Jedlicka posted 16 saves and allowed just five goals in 53 minutes of play.

Grant, an All-American, the nation's leading scorer, and a national Player of the Year candidate, upped his season totals to 45 goals and 47 assists, just three assists shy of the UD single season record of 50 set by Anthony DiMarzo in 1993. Already Delaware's single season record holder for points, he has dished out a career-high seven assists three times this season.

The game was deadlocked at 1s deadlocked at 1-1 for most of the first period and the Hens led just 6-3 at halftime. But Delaware exploded for six goals in the third quarter and held the Catamounts scoreless until the final minutes of the stanza to take control at 12-4 heading into the final quarter.
