VIRGINIA DOWNS DELAWARE 17-10 IN NCAA LACROSSE QUARTERFINALS

PRINCETON, NJ – The dream season for the University of Delaware men’s lacrosse squad came to an end Sunday as No. 2 ranked and third seed University of Virginia outscored the sixth-ranked Hens 17-10 in an NCAA Quarterfinal game at Princeton University.

Virginia (11-3), the Atlantic Coast Conference champion, won its fifth straight game and advanced to the NCAA semifinals vs. No. 2 seed Johns Hopkins Saturday at College Park, Md. No. 5 seed Georgetown will face No. 8 seed Syracuse in the other semifinal game. Syracuse upset top ranked Loyola 17-12 in Sunday’s other quarterfinal game at Princeton.

The Hens, who couldn’t hold on to a 4-0 lead midway through the first quarter, ended the best season in school history with a record of 14-3, which included losses only to Loyola, Georgetown, and Virginia. The 14 wins was the most ever by a UD men’s lacrosse team and the highest total in NCAA Division I heading into the national semifinals.

Delaware All-American John Grant made a solid claim for national player of the year honors as the senior finished with four goals and three assists to run his school record point total to 110 this season (56g, 54a), the second highest season total in NCAA Division I varsity history. Sean Carney added two goals and an assist for the Hens.

The high-scoring Cavaliers received balanced scoring as Tucker Radebaugh, Drew McKnight, and Jay Jalbert each scored four goals and dished out two assists. Dave Baruch and Hanley Holcomb also scored two times each.

Although Delaware outshot Virginia 43-41, the Cavs dominated the game on the ground, holding a 69-35 advantage in groundballs and winning 26 of the 31 faceoffs on the day.

Delaware jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead seven minutes into the game with Grant assisting on three of the scores. Virginia quicky got back in it, tying the score at 4-4 and taking a 8-7 lead into halftime on two late McKnight goals. The Cavs pulled away in the second half, scoring the first three goals of the third quarter and outscoring the Hens 6-1 for the period. Delaware never got closer than three goals the rest of the way.

“We played 60 hard minutes,” said Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw, who took his second team to the NCAA tournament in 21 years of coaching. “It was an up and down game and we had some good scoring opportunities and just didn’t finish. They had more opportunities and got some transition goals and that really hurt us.”
