Ten UD Men Win Events While Cantwell Sets School 3000 Meter Record As Blue Hen Men's Outdoor Track Teams Dominates Delaware Open

NEWARK, DE -- Ten University of Delaware men and seven women won events as the Blue Hen men’s and women’s outdoor track teams dominated the Delaware Open Saturday afternoon at the UD Mini-Stadium.

The meet, which did not feature team scoring, included Delaware, Medgar Evers, Lincoln, Gwynedd-Mercy, Cabrini, and Towson (women only).

The Delaware men were led by Gregg Cantwell (at right), who set a school record by running the 3000 meter run in 8:35.52, breaking the previous record of 8:38.95 set by Pat Riley in 2002. Jared Wasser won the shot put with a throw of 49’7.25” for the Blue Hens, while Dave Schwartz took the hammer with a throw of 153’5” and Tony DiUlio captured the discus with a throw of 148’7”.

Bob Bartocci won the javelin with a throw of 154’2”, while Matt Arbaugh took the pole vault with a leap of 14’1.25” and Matt O’Brian captured the 3000 meter steeplechase in 10:19.16. Craig Lebro won the 1500 meter run in 4:18.26 for Delaware, while Chris Bourke took the 800 meter run in 2:06.94

Doug Alpers finished second in the shot put with a throw of 49’7.25”, while Wasser placed second in the hammer with a throw of 134’4” and Chase Renoll came in second in the discus in 147’0”. Dave Gyurina finished second in the javelin with a throw of 152’7’, Dave DiVirgilio came in second in the pole vault with a leap of 13’1.5”, and Mike Zeberkiewicz was second in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 10:28.97.

The Blue Hen 4x100 meter relay team of Chris Johnson, Nick Morrisey, M.J. Rawls and Alex Tingue finished second in its race in 43.01, while Scott Vari was second in the 100 meter dash in 11.06 and Alex Gambogi placed second in the 400 meter hurdles in 1:04.91. Patrick Wilcox was second in the 3000 meter run in 9:10.85, while Nick Pyle finished second in the 5000 meter run in 15:32.10.

Rachel Young led the Delaware women by winning the shot put with a throw of 40’2.75” and the discus with a throw of 130’10”, while Christina Antonopoulos took the 1500 meter run in 4:44.14 and the 3000 meter run in 10:49.68.

Stephanie Cronk won the javelin with a throw of 110’1”, while Laura Chirico took the pole vault with a leap of 11’5.75” and Alexi Capsouras captured the 100 meter hurdles in 14.96. Asha Quant won the 400 meter dash in 56.95, while Kellyn Wright took the 800 meter run in 2:20.19 and the 4x400 meter relay team of Cristine Marquez, Quant, Capsouras and Liz Harvin won its race in 3:52.69.

Amanda Marshall finished second in the shot put with a throw of 39’11.5” and the hammer with a throw of 145’1”, while Annie Fulton placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 34’4.75” and Julia Somers came in second in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 12:06.47. Marquez was second in the 200 meter dash in 25.64, while Meghan Weaver finished second in the 3000 meter run in 11:29.56 and the 4x100 meter relay team of Brittany Wright, Quant, Daniella Price, and Harvin placed second in its race in 47.22.
