RALEIGH, NC -- Freshman Cassie White won the 5,000 meter race at the Asics/Winthrop Invitational and Jeremy Simkins (at right) was 14th in the 400 meter hurdles at the adidas Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State to lead University of Delaware outdoor track and field performances Friday.

Both the Delaware men and women competed at two meets Friday with the the women’s taking part in the Asics/Winthrop Invitational at Winthrop’s Nine Irwin Track in Rock Hill, SC. The Delaware men competed at the asics/Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State’s Derr Track in Raleigh, NC. Action will continue at both sites Saturday and member’s of the Delaware men’s and women’s teams will also compete at the University of Maryland Invitational Saturday.

White was the Blue Hens’ lone champion on the day as she won the 5,000 meters at Winthrop with a time of 18:23.13. Also for the Hens, Cristine Marquez was second in the 400 meter preliminaries in 56.26, Kayla Hennessy was third in the 100 meter hurdles preliminaries in 14:39, Julia Somers was third in the 5,000 meters (18:27.09), Yianna Antonopoulos was fifth in the 5,000 meters (18:59.84), Liz Paul finished seventh in the 5,000 meters in 19:14.32, and Asha Quant was ninth in the both the 100 meter (12.35) and 200 meter (25.58) preliminaries.

On the men’s side, Simkins was the top finisher for Delaware at North Carolina State as he placed 14th in the 400 meter hurdles (54.39) and 25th in the 110 meter hurdles (16.21). Also for the Hens, the 4 x 1,500 meter relay team was 15th in 16:31.92, Mike Ward was 17th in the 5,000 meters (15:44.07), Nick Pyle was 18th in the 10,000 meters (32:22.43), and Jimmy Daly was 20th in the 5,000 meters (16:30.77).
