Delaware Men Capture Six Events, Take Second Place Team Finish at Rider Invitational

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- The University of Delaware women’s outdoor track team, backed by 10 first place finishes, captured the team title and the Blue Hen men, who six events, place second at the Rider University Invitational Saturday afternoon.

The Delaware women posted 193 points to outlast the six-team field field. Sacred Heart was second with 175 points followed by host Rider (100.5), LaSalle (87.5), St. Peter’s (32.5), and Loyola (21). On the men’s side, Sacred Heart earned 183 points to edge Delaware with 179.5 points. LaSalle was third with 98 points followed by St. Peter’s (78), Rider (62.5), and Loyola (3).

The Blue Hen women dominated the event behind Asha Quant, who captured four events on the day, including helping the Blue Hens take first place in two relay events. She won the 100 meters in 12.40, captured the long jump with a leap of 17-8 3/4, teamed with Kayla Hennessy, Krista Cox, and Cristine Marquez to win the 4 x 100 meter relay in a school-record time of 47.04 and the 4 x 400 meter relay in a school-record time of 3:48.11.

Also winning for the UD women were Marquez in the 200 meters (24.70), Yianna Antonopoulos in the 1,500 meters (4:52.92), Hennessy in the 100 meter hurdles (14.82), Laura Chirico in the pole vault (11-5 3/4), Amanda Marshall in the hammer (154-11), and the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Kellyn Wright, Karen Mandrachia, Stephanie Taylor, and Christine Sloat (9:59.22).

On the men’s side, Delaware got first place finishes from Mike Zeberkiewicz in the 800 meters (1:57.22), Brad Dodson in the 1,500 meters (4:01.95), Jamie Igo (at right) in the high jump (6-2 3/4), Conrad Rapp in the pole vault (career-best 15-9), Brandon Swartout in the long jump (22-4 1/4), and Dave Schwartz in the hammer (career-best 161-6).
