TOWSON, Md. -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams will be battling for individual titles this weekend as the Blue Hens take part in the annual Colonial Athletic Association Championships at Towson University’s Johnny Unitas Stadium.

The meet, which includes nine women’s teams and seven men’s teams will get underway Friday, April 17 with the men’s javelin at 9:30 a.m. with the first track event the men’s 1,500 meters at 1 p.m. Saturday’s action will begin at 10 a.m.

Individual winners will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA East Regionals to be held May 29-30 at North Carolina A & T University in Greensboro, N.C. UNC Wilmington is the two-time defending team champion and has won three of the last four titles while William & Mary has won seven of the last team titles, including last year’s first place finish.

The Delaware men placed fourth last season led by individual champions Connor Whitesel in the hammer throw and Chase Renoll (at right) in the shot put. The Hens will be looking to post their best finish since placing second at the 2003 meet.

In addition to Whitesel and Renoll, other top Delaware hopefuls will be John Viotto in the shot put and discus, Jeremy Simkins in the 400 meter hurdles, Jamie Igo in the high jump, Jon Gomez in the javelin, Gregg Cantwell in the distance events, and Corey Wall, Mike Townsend, Mike Tait, and Nate Twer in the middle distance events.

The Blue Hen women placed seventh last year and has never finished better than fifth (2002) since joining the CAA in 2002.

Delaware’s top hopes this weekend will be Amanda Marshall in the shot put, discus, and hammer, Cristine Marquez and Kristi Cox in the sprint events, Kelli McDonald and Laura Chirico in the pole vault, and Karen Mandrachia, Christina Antonopoulos, Yianna Antonopoulos, and Julia Somers in the distance events.
