WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- University of Delaware athletes posted four regional qualifying times, set one school record, and broke another freshman standard during the first day of the Colonial Relays Friday at the College of William & Mary.
The Blue Hen men had five top 10 finishes, led by Gregg Cantwell’s (at right) third place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, while the UD women had three top 10 finishes, including a first place finish by freshman Jillian Seamon in the javelin and a second place finish in the 200 meters and third place showing in the 400 meters by Cristine Marquez.
Seamon broke her own UD freshman record with a toss of 139-4 in the javelin while Marquez set a new UD standard in the 200 meters (24.32) while also placing third in the 400 meters with a clocking of 55.95. Seamon and Marquez also qualified for the ECAC regional championships in May with their marks. Marquez’ time in the 200 meters broke the UD record of 24.44 by Brittany Wright in 2005.
For the Delaware men, Cantwell ran the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a career-best time of 9:24.64 while John Viotto was fourth in the shot put with an IC4A-qualifying mark of 51-6 1/2, Chase Renoll was fifth in the shot put (50-3 1/4), Connor Whitesel was sixth in the hammer with a personal best and IC4A-qualifying distance of 172-8, and Jim Schwendtner was seventh in the hammer (168-1).
