Colonial Relays Results / Penn Invitational Results
NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware outdoor track and field teams set two records at the Colonial Relays at William & Mary and Andy Weaver was the lone Blue Hen winner at the Penn Invitational to highlight action Saturday afternoon.
The Delaware men posted seven top 10 finishes and placed 15th out of 24 teams and the Blue Hen women recorded five top 10 finishes and finished seventh out of 24 teams during the second day of the Colonial Relays Saturday afternoon at William & Mary’s Zable Stadium.
At the Penn Invitational at Franklin Field Saturday, the UD men had four top 10 finishes while the women registered five top 10 postings. No team scores were kept at Penn.
At William & Mary, Delaware set two records on Saturday. Freshman Jon Gomez (at right) placed second in the javelin with a toss of 209-5 to set a new school and freshman record. He broke the school mark of 200-5 set by Joe Gelineau in 1997 and shattered is own record of 199-0. His distance qualified him for the upcoming IC4A Championships May 15-17 at Princeton as well as the NCAA East Regionals, which will be held May 29-30 at North Carolina A&T.
On the women’s side, the 4 x 1,500 meter relay team of Yianna Antonopoulos, Christina Antonopoulos, Kellyn Wright, and Karen Mandrachia posted a second place time of 19:02.19 and bettered the previous school record of 19:23.35 set in 1999.
Also at William & Mary on the women’s side, the 4 x 200 meter relay team of Cristine Marquez, Asia Hollis, Alexa Windsor, and Kristi Cox was fourth in 1:40.84, Briana Gray was fourth in the high jump (5-2 1/2), the 4 x 100 meter relay team of Hollis, Cox, Marquez, and Windsor finished fifth in 48.32, and Windsor was ninth in the high jump (5-1).
For the UD men, John Viotto was fifth in the discus (150-3), the 4 x 1,500 meter relay team of Chris Bourke, Nick Pyle, Gregg Cantwell, and Steve Vincent was seventh in 16:31.09, Chase Renoll was eighth in the discus (142-10), the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Vinny Fronczkowski, Nick Morrisey, Justin Molligan, and John Hally was eighth in 3:17.95, the 4 x 800 meter relay team of James Townsend, Mike Tait, Nate Twer, and Corey was eighth (7:47.26), and the 4 x 200 meter relay team of Fronczkowski, Morrisey, Ross Shober, and Molligan was ninth in 1:29.82.
Delaware’s lone winner at the Penn Invitational was Weaver, who captured the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:03.53. Also for the UD men, George Vernon was sixth in the 5,000 meters (15:23.32), George Vallone was seventh in the pole vault (14-1 1/4), and Shane Ordway was 10th in the pole vault (14-1 1/4).
For the UD women at Penn, Jennifer Holly was second in the pole vault (11-5 3/4), Kelli McDonald was third in the pole vault (10-11 3/4), Julia Somers was third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:56.25), Katie Rimpfel was sixth in the discus (121-5), and Laura Chirico was seventh in the pole vault (10-11 3/4).
Both Delaware teams will continue action next Saturday at the Rider Invitational.
