PHILADELPHIA -- University of Delaware outdoor track and field athletes posted five top 10 finishes to highlight the first two days of the annual Penn Relays Thursday and Friday at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field.

On Saturday, Jim Schwendtner and Connor Whitesel will compete in the men’s hammer (12:15 p.m.), and Jon Gomez will compete in the men’s javelin (12:30 p.m.). Delaware will also compete in the women’s 4 x 800 meter relay (2:15 p.m.) and men’s 4 x 800 meter relay (4:35 p.m.).

Freshman Jillian Seamon was the Hens’ top finisher as she placed third in the women’s javelin throw Thursday with a toss of 141-1, breaking her own school freshman record and posting the third best toss in school history.

Also for the Hens in the field events on Thursday, Kelli McDonald was sixth in the pole vault with a jump of 11-11 3/4 while Amanda Marshall was ninth in the shot put (43-4 1/2), 16th in the hammer (148-2), and 21st in the discus (127-7), Jennifer Holly was 14th in the pole vault (11-5 3/4), and Laura Chirico was 21st in the pole vault (10-11 3/4). Marshall’s shot put distance was the third best in school history.

On Friday, the UD women’s 4 x 1,500 meter relay team posted a ninth place finish as the team of Christina Antonopoulos, Yianna Antonopoulos, Kellyn Wright, and Karen Mandrachia ran to a time of 19:06.12. The national field included teams from Tennessee, Florida, Villanova, and Duke.

Delaware also competed in two women’s relay events on Thursday as the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Cristine Marquez, Asia Hollis, Alexi Capsouras, and Kristi Cox finished fifth in their heat and 32nd overall while the 4 x 100 meter relay group of Hollis, Cox, Marquez, and Alexa Windsor finished sixth in its heat and 48th overall with a time of 48.75. On Friday, the UD women’s 4 x 200 meter relay team of Marquez, Hollis, Windsor, and Cox placed sixth in its heat and 42nd overall with the second best time in school history at 1:40.61.

For the Delaware men, John Viotto (at right) placed seventh in the shot put Friday as his throw of 53-3 3/4 was a career best and the second longest in school history. He also finished 26th in the discus with a throw of 151-10.

Also for the UD men, the distance medley relay team of Nate Twer, Jeremy Simkins, Corey Wall, and Gregg Cantwell placed second in its heat and 14th overall (10:04.30), Cantwell was 22nd in the 5,000 meters (15:11.95), the sprint medley relay team of Nick Morrisey, Vinny Fronczkowski, Jeremy Simkins, and James Townsend was fourth in its heat and 36th overall (3:35.03), the 4 x 200 meter relay team of Fronczkowski, Ross Shober, Kyle Nagy, and Morrisey won its heat and was 41st overall (1:29.79), and the 4 x 100 meter relay team of Shober, Theo James, Simkins, and Morrisey was fourth in its heat and 75th overall (44.01).
