POMONA, N.J. -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams dominated at the Richard Stockton Invitational Saturday afternoon as the Blue Hens posted 14 first place finishes and 10 runner-up performances.
The Blue Hens had three multiple winners on the day as Amanda Marshall swept the women’s shot put, discus, and hammer throw events while Corey Wall (at right) won the men’s 800 meter and 1,500 meter contests, and John Viotto was the winner in the men’s shot put and discus.
Marshall was the only triple winner on either side as she dominated the action, winning the discus with a school-record throw of 146-feet, 1-inch, capturing the shot put with a toss of 42-3 3/4, and taking the hammer throw competition with a toss of 147-3. She broke her own school record in the discus, breaking her own mark of 144-4 set in 2007.
Viotto won the shot put with a throw of 52-7 1/4 and the discus with a toss of 156-3 1/4 while Wall won the 800 meters in 1:59.34 and the 1,500 meters in 4:06.38. His distance in the shot put was the third best in school history.
Other Delaware winners on the men’s side were Jonathan Gomez in the javelin (180-9), Jim Schwendtner in the hammer (176-3), Gregg Cantwell in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:40.32), Jamie Igo in the high jump (6-4), and the 4 x 100 meter relay team of Theo James, Jonathan Santiago, Tim Kutchen, and Wes Chandler (44.56). Other winners for the Delaware women were Jillian Seamon in the javelin (132-9) and Christina Antonopoulos in the 1,500 meters (4:43.97). Antonopoulos also placed second in the 800 meters (2:20.75) as did Briana Gray in the high jump (5-2 1/4) and Kelly Wright in the 1,500 meters (4:49.42). Seamon’s throw in the javelin was the fourth best in school history.
Earning second place finishes for the UD men were Connor Whitesel in the hammer (163-8), Chase Renoll in the discus (148-4 1/2), Kevin McCove in the triple jump (40-9), Nick Pyle in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:50.68), Kevin Kemmerle in the 5,000 meters (15:35.80), James Townsend in the 1,500 meters (4:06.82), and the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Glenn Puzio, Alex Tingue, Townsend, and Theo James (3:32.80).
Delaware will be in action next Saturday at the Towson University Invitational.
