University of Delaware Outdoor Track & Field Teams Dominate Again, Win 24 Events at Towson Invitational

TOWSON, Md. -- For the second straight week, the University of Delaware outdoor track and field teams dominated the action as the Blue Hens took home 24 first place finishes at the Towson Invitational Saturday at Towson’s Johnny Unitas Stadium.

The Delaware men captured first place in 14 events while the Blue Hens women captured 10 first place finishes, including two each by Karen Mandrachia and Amanda Marshall. Last week, the Blue Hens won 14 events at the Richard Stockton Invitational.

Among the 14 wins by the Blue Hen men were four weight events, two jumping events, and two relay competitions. Jonathan Gomez won the javelin with the second best throw in school history at 199-2, Jim Schwendtner captured the hammer (173-6), Chase Renoll won the discus (144-8), and John Viotto was the winner in the shot put (51-2 1/4).

Also for the UD men, Jamie Igo won the triple jump (42-8 3/4), George Vallone won the pole vault (13-11 1/4), Jeremy Simkins won the 400 meter hurdles (54.15) and teamed with Vinny Fronczkowski, Nick Morrisey (at left in photo), and Justin Molligan in the 4 x 400 meter relay (3:25.29), Morrisey won the 200 meters (22.80) and teamed with Fronczkowski, Molligan, and Kyle Nagy to win the 4 x 100 meter relay (42.88), Gregg Cantwell won the 5,000 meters (15:22.24), Nate Twer won the 1,500 meters (4:03.68), Corey Wall won the 800 meters (1:57.38), and Theo James won the 100 meters (11.44).

Mandrachia and Marshall were double winners for the Hens as Mandrachia captured the 800 meters (2:17.55) and 1,500 meters (4:39.09) and Marshall was the winner in the shot put (41-6) and discus (135-1) and was third in the hammer (149-8).

Also for the Blue Hen women, Jillian Seamon won the javelin (112-6), Kelli McDonald won the pole vault (11-11 3/4), Christina Antonopoulos won the 5,000 meters (17:34.01), Kristi Cox won the 400 meters (57.85) and teamed with Cristine Marquez, Asia Hollis, and Megan Wiseman to captured the 4 x 100 meter relay (48.66) and combined with Marquez, Hollis, and Kim Atkins to win the 4 x 400 meter relay (3:55.96).

Delaware will continue action next Saturday, April 4, at the University of Pennsylvania Invitational at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
