RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware athletes swept the weekly Colonial Athletic Association Field Athlete of the Week honors Thursday as John Viotto (at right) and Amanda Marshall were honored by the league office for their outstanding performances in the throwing events this past weekend at the season-opening Richard Stockton State Invitational.
Viotto, a sophomore from Dayton, N.J. (South Brunswick High School), was honored as the CAA Male Field Athlete of the Week while Marshall, a senior from Cranbury, N.J. (Hightstown HS), was named the CAA Female Field Athlete of the Week.
In addition to Viotto and Marshall, UNC Wilmington’s John Carr was named the CAA Men’s Track Athlete of the Week.
Viotto captured the men’s shot put and discus competitions at the Richard Stockton Invitational at Pomona, N.J. while Marshall was a rare triple winner by taking the women’s shot put, discus, and hammer events.
Marshall was the only triple winner on either side as she dominated the action, winning the discus with a school-record and ECAC-qualifying throw of 146-feet, 1-inch, capturing the shot put with a toss of 42-3 3/4, and taking the hammer throw competition with a toss of 147-3. She broke her own school record in the discus, breaking her own mark of 144-4 set in 2007.
Viotto won the shot put with a throw of 52-7 1/4 and the discus with a toss of 156-3 1/4 while Wall won the 800 meters in 1:59.34 and the 1,500 meters in 4:06.38. His distance in the shot put was the third best in school history.
The Blue Hens will continue action this Saturday, March 12 when they compete at the Towson (Md.) University Invitational.
