Nine Blue Hens Earn All-Colonial Athletic Association Honors for Men's Outdoor Track & Field

RICHMOND, Va. -- The University of Delaware was well represented on the All-Colonial Athletic Association Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field teams announced by the league office.

A total of 16 Blue Hen student-athletes earned All-CAA honors while Blue Hen freshman sprinter Vicky Caruso was named the CAA Women’s Track & Field Rookie of the Year after an outstanding 2010 campaign. She becomes the first Delaware track & field athlete to earn Rookie of the Year honors from the CAA.

Earning All-CAA honors for the Blue Hen women were Caruso (200 meters, 4 x 100m relay, 4 x 400m relay), Cristine Marquez (400m, 4 x 100m relay, 4 x 400m relay), Asia Hollis (4 x 100m relay), Kristi Cox (4 x 100m relay, 4 x 400m relay), Yesenia Boynton (4 x 400m relay), Jillian Seamon (javelin), and Briana Gray (high jump).

Earning All-CAA honors for the UD men were Vinny Fronczkowski (4 x 400m relay), Nick Morrisey (4 x 400m relay), Justin Molligan (4 x 400m relay), Jeremy Simkins (4 x 400m relay), Chase Renoll (discus, shot put), Nick Alexander (discus), Jim Schwendtner (hammer), Connor Whitesel (hammer), and Daniel Kinkler (javelin - at right).

All athletes who finished in the top three at the CAA meet in April at George Mason were designated as All-CAA.

Caruso, a freshman from Stockholm, N.J. (Walkill Valley High School), earned the team’s Alumni Association Team Most Valuable Player Award this spring after setting school records in the 200 meters (23.67), 4 x 100 meter relay (46.17), 4 x 200 meter relay (1:36.55), and 4 x 400m relay (3:40.72) and UD freshman records in the 100, 200, and 400 meters.

She captured 12 meet titles during the season and had four top four finishes at the CAA Championships, placing second in the 4 x 100 meter relay, second in the 200 meters, second in the 4 x 400 meter relay, and fourth in the 100 meters. She also earned All-East honors in the 200 meters, 4 x 100 meter relay, and 4 x 400 meter relay and advanced to the NCAA East Regionals where she placed 45th in the 200 meters.

In addition to Caruso, Towson’s Ashley Adams and George Mason’s Tiara Swindell shared the CAA Co-Female Athletes of the Year, William & Mary’s Kathy Newberry was named CAA Women’s Coach of the Year, Northeastern’s Nate Hunter was named CAA Male Athlete of the Year, George Mason freshman David Verburg was selected CAA Male Rookie of the Year, and George Mason’s Andrew Gerard was named CAA Men’s Coach of the Year.
