Blue Hens Take
Second; Capture Four Individual
Titles

NEWARK, DE - Erin Gemmill
captured both the 800 meter and 1,500 meter runs to lead the
University of Delaware women to a first place team finish
and the UD men won four first place finishes to place second
overall to highlight the University of Delaware Outdoor
Track and Field Invitational Saturday at the Delaware
Mini-Stadium.

The Delaware women, who captured five
first place finishes, won the Division I team title with 170
points to outdistance Coppin State (149) and Temple (123) in
the eight-team field. Kutztown captured the Division II/III
team title with 273 points.
Army won the men's Division I title with
178 points while Delaware and Yale tied for second with 160
points among the eight teams. The College of New Jersey won
the Division II/III title with 182 points.
Gemmill captured the 800 meters in a time
of 2:20.27 and came back with another victory in the 1,500
meters (4:45.63) to become the Blue Hens' only double winner
on the day. Also capturing first place for the Hens were
Christine Kowalchuk in the javelin (37.02 meters),
Jessica Urbonas in the discus (37.49m), and Kate
Klim in the 3,000 meter steeplechase
(11:29.19).
Urbonas also placed second in the javelin
(35.04m) and sixth in the shot put (10.33m), Lissy
Dean was second in the triple jump (11.28m), fourth in
the 400 meter hurdles (1:08.75), and fourth in the long jump
(5.29m), Tyechia Smith was third in the 400 meters
(58.65) and fifth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:08.92), and
Michelle Perno was third in the discus (36.55m) and
seventh in the shot put (10.06m).
Taking first place on the men's side for
the Hens were Mike Yost in the hammer (47.55m),
Ben Thuma in the discus (45.59m), Jerome
Holder in the 110 meter hurdles (14.77), and John
Morgan in the 800 meters (1:54.69).
Yost was also second in the discus
(45.23), Thuma was sixth in the shot put (11.86m), Holder
was sixth in the 400 meter hurdles (57.06), Pat
Boettcher was second in the 800 meters (1:57.53),
Nick Riordan was third in the triple jump (13.05m)
and fifth in the long jump (6.51m), Nate Irvin was
fourth in both the 100 meters (11.13) and 200 meters
(22.56), Jim DelGrosso was sixth in the high jump
(1.91m) and eighth in the long jump (6.08m), and Greg
Barker was third in the discus (42.37m) and eight in the
shot put (10.83m).
Both Delaware teams will continue action
next weekend at the Colonial Athletic Association
championships in Richmond, VA.
