-- Senior Casey Bennett captured the pole
vault competition to lead the University
of Delaware women to a seventh place
finish while Mike Yost (right) won the
discus to lead the Blue Hen men to a fifth
place finish at the Colonial Athletic
Association Outdoor Track and Field
Championships Friday and Saturday at
George Mason University.
The UNC
Wilmington men regained the championship
after winning each year from 1997-2002, as
the Seahawks finished with 218.5 points.
Virginia Commonwealth was second with 172
points, followed by George Mason (140),
two-time defending champion William &
Mary (132), Delaware (77.5), and James
Madison (72).
The
William & Mary women won their fifth
straight team title by accumulating 218
points, finishing ahead of Virginia
Commonwealth (163), UNC Wilmington (162),
James Madison (83), Towson (76), George
Mason (72), and Delaware (41).
Bennett
won her 18th career pole vault title and
was Delaware's fifth conference champion
since joining the CAA in 2002 in leaping
11-11 3/4 to lead the Blue Hen women.
Rachel Young was third in the hammer
(141-3) for Delaware, while Kate Klim was
fourth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase
(11:22.52) to record a top eight finish in
the steeplechase for the fourth straight
season. The Blue Hen 4x100 meter relay
team of Brittany Wright, Rayna Horsey,
Kristen Frustillo, and Domonique Carter
was fourth in its race (48.25), while
Julie Hischman was sixth in the javelin
(115-9) and Wright placed sixth in the 100
meter dash (12.38).
Kaitlin
McGowan finished seventh in the pole vault
(9-6 1/4), while Lisa Weeks was seventh in
the shot put (37-9 1/2) and the UD 4x400
meter relay team of Horsey, Carter, Megan
Oberst and Wright was seventh in its race
(4:06.19). Stephanie Cronk finished eighth
in the hammer (133-6), Regan Hastings
placed eighth in the pole vault (9-6 1/4),
Carter came in eighth in the 400 meter
dash (1:00.23), and Weeks was fourth in
the discus (121-4).
Yost won
the discus with a throw of 151-7 to become
the third Blue Hen men's CAA Champion, and
also posted his third career top five
finish in the CAA hammer event by setting
a personal record with a toss of 177-11 to
place second in the hammer. Jason Bradley
finished second in the 110 meter hurdles
(14.53), while Chris Dixon was also second
in the 400 meter hurdles (52.73). The
Delaware 4x400 meter relay team of Charlie
Williams, Dixon, Phil Smiley, and Dave
Sherman placed third in its race in
3:19.93.
Matt Guida
was fourth in the pole vault (14-1 1/4),
Dixon finished fourth in the 110 meter
hurdles (14.67), and Smiley placed fourth
in the 400 meter hurdles (53.55). The UD
4x100 meter relay team of Pat Henry,
Bradley, Scott Vari, and Williams was also
fourth in its event in 42.25.
Adam
Cianfichi was fifth in the javelin
(157-7), while P.J. Meany was sixth in the
5,000 meters (14:56.03). Eric Lehrer
finished seventh in the javelin (147-8),
Kyle Casella was seventh in both the
hammer (145-8) and shot put (44-6 1/4),
Matt Harrell placed seventh in the 5000
meter run (15:06.06), and Williams came in
seventh in the 400 meter dash
(48.98).
As
individual event champions, Bennett and
Yost will compete in the NCAA Regionals on
May 27-28 at Manhattan College. Both Blue
Hen outdoor track teams return to action
on April 28-30 when they compete in the
Penn Relays.
