Delaware vs. Old
Dominion
Sept. 2, 1999
Old Dominion 3, Delaware 2
NEWARK, DE - Old Dominion scored three times in a
span of 2:41 midway through the second half to surge past
Delaware, 3-2, in men's soccer action at Delaware
Mini-Stadium.
The Blue Hens took a 1-0 lead in the first half and
dominated play for the first 55 minutes. Rob MacLeod
scored at 37:42 to give the Hens the lead. Delaware missed
on several opportunities early in the second half that could
have extended that lead.
Old Dominion took advantage of Delaware's missed
opportunities when Michael Tooley, Spiros
Blackburn and Jimmy Tanner tallied goals at the
21:12, 22:22 and 23:53 marks of the second half. Tooley beat
Delaware keeper David Owens to a loose ball to tie
the score. Blackburn scored 70 seconds later on a head ball
to give the Monarchs the lead. Then, just 91 seconds later,
Tanner tapped home a feed from Carlos Mendes to make it
3-1.
Delaware rallied to within one with 5:25 remaining on a
goal by Brian Shepanski. Shepanski beat Chuck
Connelly to the near post to make it a 3-2 game.
However, the Blue Hens could not connect on two good
opportunities late to tie the game.
The game was marred by 10 yellow cards and two ejections.
Delaware held a 10-9 advantage in shots.
Delaware will head on the road over the weekend to the
James Madison Tournament. The Blue Hens take on the host
Dukes Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
