Hofstra 3, Delaware 2 (OT)
October 13, 2000

Pat Werner

NEWARK, DE -- Senior Vincent Carbone lifted a shot over the head of Delaware goalkeeper Alex McGroarty from 25 yards out with 3:14 left in the first overtime to lift Hofstra University to a 3-2 America East men's soccer victory over the University of Delaware Friday afternoon at Delaware Field.

Hofstra (6-3-3, 3-1-1 America East) moved into first place in the league standings with 10 points while the Blue Hens, coming off a big 1-0 win over regionally-ranked Navy Tuesday, fell to 2-11 (0-4). The Hens have now lost eight straight league games since a win over New Hampshire last Oct. 17. Delaware had defeated the Pride 4-1 last season in Hempstead, NY.

The Blue Hens, who outshot Hofstra 18-15, got two goals from freshman Pat Werner (Cox/Virginia Beach, VA), the second just six minutes into the second half off assists from Kyle Shilcock-Elliott (Radnor/Wayne, PA) and Stephen Mangat (St. Mark's HS) to tie the game 2-2. Werner posted the Hens' first multiple goal game of the season and first since Dennis O'Connell scored twice vs. Hofstra last season.

Neither team scored again until Carbone netted his first goal of the season in overtime off a pass from Anthony Barberio from the middle of the field. The shot barely eluded McGroarty's outstretched hands.

Werner spotted the Blue Hens to a 1-0 lead when he scored off a feed from Mike Krepps (North Penn/Lansdale, PA) 20 minutes into the game but Hofstra came back with two goals before the half, tying the game at 1-1 on a goal by Aboubacar Camara 31 minutes into the game and taking the lead seven minutes later on a goal by Paul Saccoccio.

Hofstra goalkeeper Andrew Brooke posted six saves while McGroarty made seven stop.
