NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore forward
Mike Honeysett scored the game's only goal at the
27:02 mark of the first half and sophomore goalkeeper
Alex McGroarty posted the shutout in only his second
career start as the University of Delaware upended Navy 1-0
in men's soccer action Tuesday at Delaware Field.
Honeysett, a sophomore from
Mechanicsburg, PA (Cumberland Valley HS), netted his
team-high third goal of the season from 10 yards out midway
through the first half and the score held up as the Blue
Hens (2-10) snapped a six-game losing streak with their
first win since a 2-1 victory over Temple Sept.
13.
McGroarty (Quaker Valley/Sewickley, PA),
thrust into the starting role with starter Nick
Konawalik out for the year with a neck injury, came up
big, posting nine saves for his first career shutout. Navy
outshot the Hens 15-10.
"We are thrilled with this win," said
Delaware head coach Marc Samonisky. "We have been
playing so much better over the last few games, especially
defensively. It's nice to see that the hard work has earned
us a win. Navy is a good team that has been playing well. We
just hope we can continue to keep getting
better."
The Midshipmen, ranked No. 5 in the
National Soccer Coaches Association of America South
Atlantic Region poll, dropped their second straight to fall
to 9-2-1. Leading scorer Brye Gerhardt, who entered the game
with nine goals, was held to just two shots.
Honeysett, who scored his third
game-winning goal of his career, had six of the Blue Hens'
10 shots on goal. The Hens defeated Navy for the first time
in nine all-time meetings.
Delaware will host Hofstra Friday and
Drexel Sunday in two America East conference games this
weekend.
