No home field for Hens,
but hopes still alive for America East Tournament bid 

 

BOSTON -- Joachim Kaland scored twice in the first half as Boston University thumped Delaware, 6-0, in America East men's soccer action at Nickerson Field on Friday night.

With the loss, Delaware's hopes of a home first round playoff game were dashed. Delaware could still make the tournament as a No. 6 seed. New Hampshire (6-7-3, 4-4-2) has 14 points and plays Hofstra on Sunday afternoon. Delaware has 13 points (7-10-1, 4-5-1) and takes on Northeastern on Sunday. Albany (7-9-0, 4-6-0) has 12 points and faces Vermont Sunday afternoon. A Delaware win and a New Hampshire tie or loss would put Delaware into the tournament. If Delaware ties Northeastern, the Blue Hens would need New Hampshire to lose and Albany to do no better than a tie with Vermont.

Kaland scored at 20:17 and at 32:55 as the Terriers jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back.

With the win, Boston University moved back into a tie for first place with Towson University atop America East. Towson held first place for all of an hour after defeating Northeastern, 2-0, across town. Towson and Boston University (both 8-1-1 in league play) will square off for the regular season title Sunday afternoon at Nickerson Field. The winner will host the America East semifinals and finals next weekend.

Hofstra, Northeastern and Hartford have also already clinced spots in the America East Tournament. Hartford and either Hofstra or Northeastern will host first round games on Wednesday.
