October 26, 2001 Five players score as Hens tame Black Bears
NEWARK, DE -- Five different players scored goals, as the University of Delaware men's soccer team defeated the University of Maine, 6-0, Friday night at the Mini-Stadium. Delaware started quickly, scoring two goals in the first ten minutes of play. Pat Werner (Virginia Beach, VA) scored the contest's first goal after a Mike Honeysett shot bounced off a Black Bear defender. Klye Shilcock-Elliott scored his first goal of the season at 9:44, netting the rebound of a Dan Keane shot that bounced off the right goal post. Keane's assist moved the Newark native into a tie for sixth on Delaware's career assist list with12. Honeysett and Keane added goals of their own before the end of the first half to give Delaware a 4-0 lead. The offensive onslaught continued as Werner added his second goal of the contest six minutes into the second half, netting a Jeff Martell crossing pass. Freshman Adam Flanigan scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the 62 minute to cap the scoring for the Blue Hens. The Hen defense dominated the Maine (2-11, 1-7) offense, allowing just two shots on UD keepers Kyle Haynes and Morgan Funsten. Sunday is Senior Day at the Mini-Stadium as the Blue Hens take on New Hampshire in America East play at 1 p.m. The matchup with the Wildcats is UD's final home game of the season.
