Carlson goal lifts Hens

NEWARK,DE-- Eric Carlson scored midway through the second overtime as the University of Delaware's men's soccer team defeated Rider University, 1-0, at Delaware Mini-Stadium Wednesday night.

Carlson, a freshman from Albuquerque,MN, out raced Bronc goalie Brian Gill for a loose ball, putting it in the net to score the lone goal 111 minutes into the match. The goal was the first of Carlson's career.

The victory ends a three-game losing streak for the Blue Hens (2-3).

Delaware keeper Kyle Haynes recorded five saves in his first career shutout. Gill stopped eight shots for Rider, which falls to 0-3-2 on the season.

The Blue Hens take a week off before returning to action September 26 against Monmouth at 7 p.m at Delaware Mini-Stadium.
