BALTIMORE, MD -- Host Maryland
Baltimore County scored two goals in the first 17 minutes
of the game on its way to a 3-0 men's soccer win over the
University of Delaware in the Kappa Kick-Off Classic
Championship Game Sunday at UMBC Stadium.
Delaware (1-1), which advanced to the
title game with a 2-1 win over Mt. St. Mary's Friday,
outshot the Retrievers 9-7 but could not get past goalkeeper
Brian Rowland (five saves).
UMBC (2-0) scored all three of its goals
in the opening half on the way to the win. Franco Del Priore
got the scoring started with a goal just 14:19 into the game
off a feed from Mike Pennachia and tournament Most Valuable
Player Derek McElligott followed with a goal from James
Hamilton just two minutes later.
Ricky Brown added some insurance with a
goal off an assist from George Bakoulas eight minutes
later.
Delaware senior goalkeeper Kyle
Haynes (St. Michael's/St. Michael's) posted one save in
taking the loss. Earning All-Tournament honors for the Blue
Hens were senior forward Dan Keane (St.
Mark's/Newark, DE), junior midfielder Jeff Martell
(Watchung Hills/Chatham, NJ), and junior defender
Mike Marino (North Branford/North Branford,
CT).
McElligott, a freshman, was joined on the
All-Tournament team by Mark Shkreli of Iona, Brandon
Scarfield and Kurt Borel of Mt. St. Mary's, and teammates
Rowland, Brown, Hamilton, Andy Wells, and Brandon
Quaranta.
Delaware will return to aciton Sept. 8 at
James Madison University.
